Great tip, Dianne. Especially useful in the waiting areas of train and bus stations where the opportunities are endless. I took along paper and a Tombow pen and had a ball. So much so that I decided to do the figures frontally, as well! Is there any chance that you could do a quick tip on faces in crowds, without actually doing a detailed portrait --just indications or hints of the features? Thanks again for this and all your tips. Carol

Carol, it's a matter of observing the value differences within those faces rather than think of them as faces. I'll put your request on our schedule, but because we film these several weeks in advance, it will be perhaps January or February before it appears.

@@IntheStudioArtInstruction I'm very much looking forward to the intended quick tip! Many years in art class I did a self-portrait in oil responding only to the values and hues (not features) and was amazed at the realistic result. How would this work, however, with people in crowds in the distance where it is difficult to see where the light specifically falls??? Thanking you ahead of time and wishing you a great week , Carol

Hi Dianne, I have a question where you maybe have ab answer for. I like dramatic skies in mij paintings and i can find enough where I live (the Netherlands) but the corresponding landscape is often not that great. So, I tried to take the sky from one picture I took and the landscape from another one of my pictures. (I like to paint my environment.) Problem is that the connection of the two just doesn’t look right. what should I look for when combining 2 pictures for one painting?

Doppy Hoppy, the color of the sky and the direction of the light in it will influence the color of the landscape and where the shadows are. You can do that by using a mother color (see Quick Tip 238) and by reinterpreting the light source (See Quick Tip 317) and then the landscape will belong to the sky of your paintings.

For the life of me I have such a difficult time painting rocks,large or small. I have watched your tip on rock painting, but I still can’t get it. Can you please show another demo that might help me.
@IntheStudioArtInstruction
@IntheStudioArtInstruction 2 жыл бұрын
George, my guess is that you are approaching it with expectation rather than observation. Look for the differences in value on the planes of the rocks and match those values within the plane's shape, but switch your thinking to ONLY the degree of light/dark of the value, not that it is a rock.
