Thank you Dianne. I appreciate your stance on this. That said it’s fun to see your process at this stage of the painting.

Thank you Diane 😊. I personally adore the fan brush, but thanks for showing how to do some grass type details with a different brush.

On the wide-angle view [2:30] I like the effect of how there are no hard edges and the painting just fades into white. I could certainly see a painting framed in such a way as to take advantage of that look. Then in the close-ups [3:00] I noticed that there is a pencil line to give a boundary. I'm assuming that normally, using the full canvas, there wouldn't be a need for a boundary to stay inside though I'm thinking it's not unusual to see lines like that and even rough pencil sketches on some watercolors. (I do understand the differences between painting on a full canvas vs watercolor paper.) So my question would be, a) does the painting get refined with a hard edge right up to the pencil line and then a mat hiding the pencil edge, b) does it get left as it is with a mat hiding the pencil edge so that some of the areas fading to white are retained, c) would it be left as is with a wider mat (or no mat) that exposes the pencil edge and the fade in it's full glory, or d) as mentioned above, it wouldn't (or perhaps shouldn't) happen outside of a demonstration so it's a non-issue?

I assume you are referring to the format for the painting. When painting on a stretched canvas, the format is set, but when painting on sheet canvas, the artist can set the format either prior to doing the painting or after it is done. Richard Schmid mostly painted on sheet canvas, the stretched the painting after it was done. For these small demo studies I use for teaching, I use sheet canvas cut from a primed roll onto which I set a format before beginning. The composition then get's set within that format. Oil paintings need the circulation of air, so shouldn't be matted, but set directly into a frame. Any rough edges touching the format edge will be hidden by the frame's overlap. If I choose a floating frame, I will then touch up the edges.

I’m at a point that I’m finally happy in my ability to make a realistic painting (at least more often than I used too), but now I see photo realism as a danger on my horizon and want to step back to a more impressionistic interpretation (which is more my style). Probably a balance you can only find by making a lot of paintings I think?

Don't worry about style. Just create the painting according to how it pleases you and your style will show through.

I'm one of those 'patchwork' painters - not so much with urban landscapes or interiors, but ABSOLUTELY with still life. I've done complete dead reckoning before, where I've painted fruit, cut glass, silverware, bowls and a table cloth, and haven't even blocked a single thing in. I'll start with one item, stitch the values together, and paint that item to completion before moving onto the next thing. The results are often of a good standard, I'd just never recommend anyone paint like that. It's more a bad habit than it is anything else, it's as if you're doing your entire painting 'uphill' from the very first brushstroke. I don't know why I only ever do it with still life though. It might be an element of overconfidence towards the subject matter.

Mr. Snrub, in my own work, the blockin helps pull the composition together as a whole.

Once again Dianne , thank-you for imparting your knowledge on to us mere mortals. Although I work in acrylics I find your teachings (using oils) to be relevant and , thanks to you , I am learning more and more "things I didn't know that I didn't know" so that , by recalling your teachings, my art improves week by week. I just hope that I have enough weeks left to produce a painting that I am completely happy with!!
