Update from Quick Tip 310: my skies have benefited ENORMOUSLY since that video. I've found that once all of the values have been sutured up it doesn't matter what you do with your brush work at the end. It's still going to come off as pretty photorealistic. Yep, another little nugget added to the arsenal.

This information came just at the right time for me! I have a couple of images that I want to recreate with a different light source. Thank you for this simple technique. I'm going on your web site now to look up those courses that you recommended.

Hi Dianne,I've been watching your quick tip on Darks,and,Lights" tutorial,and,wonder if you can give me any hints regarding a "Sepia" painting I want to do of my animals on the farm. Maybe you have one already? kind regards
@IntheStudioArtInstruction3 жыл бұрын
Allison, the trend of "Sepia painting" is pretty much just using values of the earth colors in the red and red/orange hue range. There's no magic to it except that you are limiting your hues, but you still use the same value range according to how the light is hitting and how things fall into shadows. It's the same principle as using the sepia tones for drawing rather than charcoal or graphite.

@@IntheStudioArtInstruction Right....thank you Dianne. That makes a lot of sense. Maybe I complicate things sometimes,and,"over think " .Okay,today will be a sepia sheep day.

Great lesson once again! I have a random question . I noticed you wear white shirts a lot. I heard that reflects too much light onto the canvas causing glare ! shouldn’t we we wearing black or something dark?

Hello What do you think about Mixingwhite f i to use in this exercise and its advantage, I listened to a talk yesterday about whites, he was talking too about Underpainting white. You are a cream to always answer questions.

Without white, we would be limited in the halftone values we can create.

Call me slow, but I have a huge problem with changing the light source from what's in my photo. So if it's the hay, I have to put a toilet paper roll or bottle on it's side on my desk and then move my desk lamp around b d to be the light source I want. Then I can take a photo of that at the eye angle I want and do a notan from that. From there I'm almost home free. For a house or a barn it can use an Amazon box or rectangular or square Kleenex box, rig som kind of roof with the lid part way up, or something. Boulders on a mountain or river are rocks from the garden in a tray or cookie sheet with a little water. People are dolls. Or toy figures. It get the concept, but somehow I still need a solid facsimile fir the final mental breakthrough.

James Gurney makes maquettes to determine how things behave under whatever light source. In essence, you are doing the same thing, only with stand-in "actors".
