One of the most important aspects of knowing a paint out of the tube color is what colors make up that color. Say for instance that you want a nice purple. Most any mixture of red and blue with give you some form of purple. In this case, to avoid a muddy purple mix Ultra marine blue (contains blue and red) & quinacridone magenta. (contains red and blue). There are no complementary colors in this mix. As you know complements when combined create "mud" . I would love to see Diane delve into this concept to help beginners.
@IntheStudioArtInstruction5 ай бұрын
I have delved into it throughout the Quick Tips and in several courses on the Academy. Complements mixed together don't create mud. Mud happens as a result of poor value contrast and poor color harmony.

Thanks for the help on color bias explanation, didn’t know this .. can you tell me please if i want to have vibrant colors for a sunset for example and I want it to be gradient having vibrant yellow, orang , red , purple to blue… so I need to mix colors that has more red to the paint correct? Could you recommend what color pigments can I use.. do I use magenta , what yellow, purple and blue do you suggest. Thanks so much for your help. I always end up with dull colors. Thanks
@IntheStudioArtInstruction11 ай бұрын
It's not just the hue we use to create vibrant sunsets, but the degrees of saturation. The saturation gradation of the hues at the same value plays the largest role in creating the vibrancy we see. The hues we use depend upon what we observe happening in the particular sunset we are interpreting. One way to study this is to go to wikiart.org and search for luminism or luminist painters and study the gradations of saturation of hues they used to communicate that brilliance.

Dianne, I have a question for you. You did a video on shadows. Great tip. How do you mix the color for the colors white and brown? I’m just not sure what the opposite colors of brown is on the color wheel is unless I look at the two colors that make up brown. That’s good for brown but white, would it be grey?
@IntheStudioArtInstruction4 жыл бұрын
We have a Quick Tip on brown coming out on June 10. It's called Brown's not Brown, so watch for that. Brown is a low intensity warm hue (in the red to orange to yellow range), so it's already got a lot of its complement in it. The shadows on brown, depending upon which warm hue is its bias, will require a bit more of that complement. For example, if the "brown" is a red-orange hue leaning more towards red, then the complement would be a blue-green leaning more towards green. White is not a color, but contains all colors. For the shadow of something white, we have to look at the color reflecting into that shadow. For example, on snow when the sky is clear, the blue of the sky will be reflected in the shadow. That one requires observation rather than a formula.

What does it mean to have harmony and tension? I have heard that comment and wasn't sure how it applied to a painting. Thank you.
@IntheStudioArtInstruction4 жыл бұрын
Harmony (like in music) means that everything belongs, that the painting is in tune with itself. Most professional artists depend upon color harmony to do this. Tension means that there are strong contrasts either in color, value, opposing shapes, opposing directions, or images in conflict.

I have a doubt. When do you say thin over thick, it isn’t the same rule fat over lean? Or thin can be lean, using terebintina. I thought I only could to use oil medium over the second layer. Sorry, I’m confused. Anyway, I love to watch this videos. It give me wish to go and paint . Thanks!
@IntheStudioArtInstruction4 жыл бұрын
Fat over lean refers to the amount of oil in the paint. Oil paint does not evaporate like water soluble paints, rather the oil in it oxidizes. If a layer on top oxidizes before a layer underneath it, there is a risk that as the underneath layer oxides it will pull away from the dryer one on top and eventually the surface layer will crack an potentially fall off.

Thank you. However, is it important to have warm and cool balance in every art?
@IntheStudioArtInstruction4 жыл бұрын
It is important that one or the other be predominant according to the kind of light source, and that the non-dominate temperature supports the dominant. It's a good idea to avoid a 50/50 distribution of warm/cool.

Just a thought, not a criticism, but.. I wonder why you don't use Cyan (Blue), which, I think might be considered a 'purer' color than, say, an ultra blue. Just saying... :*)
@IntheStudioArtInstruction4 жыл бұрын
Good question, Veaudor. I have Rembrandt Viridian (a clear, deep, transparent blue green) on my palette that, when mixed with a bit of Ultramarine Blue, gives a lovely Cyan. So using these two, rather than Cyan, I can get variations in both directions--towards blue and towards green as well as the pure color of Cyan.

This answer is incorrect. For helpful information on color bias, see Michael Wilcox's book, Blue and Yellow don't Make Green.
