Thank you for these tips, I was approaching Gesture Drawing completely wrong, in a way I was expecting to capture the complete shape of an image but this taught me to capture the movement without worrying about being perfect.

Thank you Dianne for this explanation. I can see how gesture drawing would be very relaxing and help me become a better painter. I look forward to trying it. I do have a question: Is brown a color or is it like black or white? I ask because I know it’s typically made by combining color opposites, but it doesn’t appear on the color wheel. Can you explain or direct me to one of your quick tips?
@IntheStudioArtInstruction2 жыл бұрын
Brown is a color, but not a hue. Words like brown, magenta, olive, teal, ochre etc, are generic names given to various combinations of hues and saturations of hues, so the word color applies to them. But the hue names are more specific, referring to yellow, orange, red, violet, blue and green. So brown would be a low saturation of the hue red-orange.

As a person who HATES drawing, this is a revelation. I have so much hyper-mobility in my hands that strict movements - like writing and marking out, are incredibly hard (if not painful) to do. My handwriting is abysmal and my drawing isn't much better, which has led to some otherwise very well painted landscapes of London look slightly awry, as my architecture can come off looking tight and lopsided. It's a shame, because my values will be on the money. Sooo... I may take a sketchbook out with me next time I'm in the city and practise this; I think it will be a real game changer, not just for cityscapes but also interiors and still-life (the latter being my preferred subject matter.) With the way the city is developing architecturally, straight lines are rarely a thing anyway.

It can be a game changer in many ways. Frederick Franck wrote a little treasure called Zen Seeing, Zen Drawing that you might find reinforcing.

Wonderful explanation Dianne! Question: if you are establishing placement of shapes using thin paint and a brush during the initial no-tan phase of a painting, do you create or outline those shapes with gesture drawing using a brush, or do you "sketch" with the brush in laying out shapes?
@IntheStudioArtInstruction2 жыл бұрын
Grant, I usually do a few gesture drawings of the subject on paper prior to plotting it on the canvas. But when I'm doing the preliminary drawing on the canvas I am sketching, though with gestural movement. With lots of practice doing gesture drawing, there comes a time when the movement becomes a part of the sketching process.

I like the language you use to separate sketching from gesture work. A word which can help people understand simple gesture drawing is flow. For those of us who need more granularity we can do a 1-line gesture drawing, then a 2-line one, then a three, etc.
@IntheStudioArtInstruction2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for adding that suggestion, Chuck. I got that language from Kimon Nicolaides, the master gesture drawing teacher from the 1930's.

Thank you so much! I know this may be a bit unrelated to the video, but what kind of paint do you normally use?
@IntheStudioArtInstruction2 жыл бұрын
For oil paint, my preferences require lightfastness, creamy consistency, and color preference. Currently, I prefer Gamblin, Rembrandt, Daniel Smith, Utrecht and Williamsburg, depending upon the color.
Please please zoom the camera into the image being explained. I love you Dianna but. I'd like to see more of what your expertly teaching us ! please Gratefully Penny
