Idaho resident here! We love the City of Rocks. What makes this a "National Reserve" is the fact that this is private land. The Reserve is a compromise of sorts to allow the land owner to keep the property, but gives the public permanent access. There are campgrounds here and it is very much worth a visit. Really, a Mecca for rock climbers. Just North of the City of Rocks are the natural alpine lakes on Cache Peak, and then Mt. Harrison, site of a WW2 B-24 crash with much debris still present. James, what is best about your videos is that it is what makes VFR flight great; enjoying the experience of seeing the world we fly over.

Very enjoyable video - both from the flying aspects and the scenery. The narration was just right too! Looking forward to the next Part - and also to any more news on the RV-12. Thank you.

Thanks again James for sharing your life and your passion. I owned Ercoupe 74770, a 1946 ser# 443. it had the old landing gear with Hayes brakes, and the stainless steel fuel tanks. 23 gal, 85 hp. definitely not the performer yours is. your vids transport me back to 1974 when I too was winging my way across the not to high country of southern cal. Good memories. Thanks James.

Thanks for sharing the memory there, GullyWhumper! And I appreciate you taking the time to comment. Looks like Ercoupe N74770's registration belongs to a Mooney now. I wonder if yours is still around?

@@JamesGood Thanks for the response James. I restored my Ercoupe in 1980 and it won the Grand Champion award for the western states after that. then i sold it and the new owner re-registered it to N747BW (I think). during the restoration it got heavy and my plan was to reengine to a Lyc 0235 to solve the weight issue, but..... well you know how that goes. BTW it was the fold-out in Plane and Pilot mag 1981-2.

Hey James... Nice video specially the crop circles and Rock City. Always great to see another video from you ! Sorry to lose the Stearman... I'll be looking for you when you get down to L00, MHV again. Ron

Hey Ron. Yes, I really wanted to add more days East, but it's difficult to manage work and family obligations 'in the air'. Still, got a lot of good times out of this trip, as it was.

I recently had the pleasure to instruct in a students Ercoupe. Very impressed with the forethought that went into this plane's design. So simple and easy to fly. I would love to own one someday.

James! Thanks for the ride. Looking forward to the next episode. I’ll be limited to doing an hour tomorrow. Testing a wiring change and heating the oil for an oil change and rotate the spark plugs.

Interesting to see the difference between the Stearman and the Ercoupe, and yet how few years separate their design. To my eyes the Stearman looks so old, but the Ercoupe looks so modern. Some great views over the lake and into the mountains, fly safe.

Thanks, Rob! Hopefully Andrew will comment on the Stearman’s mission, but I think it did a good job of setting pilots up for the higher power aircraft they would move onto after the ‘basic trainer’. You needed strong rudder skills with it. The Ercoupe is exactly the opposite, about as relaxing to fly as they come! Super easy, and designed as such.

Beautiful flight and really well filmed, and to be honest, I liked the narration. Over in the US/Florida myself at the moment, will need to see if I can find some ultralight/microlighting fliers...

Thanks, Neil. The narration was actually quite fun to do in the end. Maybe I'll work that into the videos even when I have the cockpit audio. I can research things better, after the fact! Are you visiting the mouse?!

Another entertaining video, I enjoy everyone you post. Out of curiosity, is your Ercoupe a rudder-less model? I’ve always been interested in the design of these very cool airplanes. Cheers! And will look forward to your next leg of this adventure.

Thanks, Randy. Mine came from the factory with no rudder pedals, and fabric wings. It now has rudder pedals, and metal covered wings.

G, day James from Sydney Australia. The salinity and pink algae of the lake, is that natural or from poor farming practices (superphosphate "fert") and water resource management? 🌏🇭🇲
@JamesGood
@JamesGood Жыл бұрын
I'm not an expert on this. :) But I think it's 'natural'. The high salinity is natural, due to the fact that the lake is on an ancient sea bed, with no outlets except evaporation. And the salt loving algae is natural, I guess? I don't think agricultural phosphates have anything to do with it. But again, I'm not an expert!

I do know one significant man-made detail, it's the railroad. They crossed the lake on a trestle, originally. But this was later updated to a dyke, and that stopped flow between the North and South of the lake. And today, the lake is often two different colours, due to the different algeas that become dominant.
