Into the Fire | The Story of Fort Benning's 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion

Commander of the Maneuver Center of Excellence, Major General Patrick Donahoe, tells the story of 1st Sgt. Walter Morris and Col. Ridgely Gaither.
These men were integral to the formation of the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, the first African-American paratroopers in the Army, and it all started right here on Fort Benning.

My late uncle MSG(Ret) Alexander “Whit” Jones was a paratrooper in the 555th and one of the first group of Black paratroopers to integrate the 82nd Airborne Division.

When I was in the 1/178th Infantry in the Illinois Army National Guard in Chicago, we used to drive retired members of the 555th(Triple Nickel) in the annual Bud Biliken parade.
