Amazing movie. Amazing history. I usually read that he had mental problems, maybe the real problematics ones are ourselves that make every day a sick society and call those who can't stand "disturbed". Indigenous peoples are much more independent than ourselves, in a lot of ways. Yet, they realise that they are not alone, but in a whole systematic and nature and its wilderness are inside it. People like Chris McCandless shows us much more that we can imagine, beyond our ridiculous control.

This song is awesome it touched bottom of my heart and soul, Christopher's life story changed me I always hated system and lawls and I wanted to live with nature, but when i heard his story it motivated me to do the same thing better to die as free man then live as a slave. I live in croatia and I'm anarchyst if you wanna join the long trip among nature you are welcome among me and my friends :D

You got it wrong in the description. He graduated in 1990. He died some time in the later part of august 1992 after travelling around for two years. His last journal entry was on 12th august 1992(23 years ago today) and all it said was ''Beautiful Blueberries''. Great video tho!! : D

Interestingly enough, I'd read of Christopher McCandless in a book on foraging before the film even came out. He was used as a warning on how NOT to attempt survival in the wilderness. Too bad Hollywood decided to fictionalize a tragic story. Beautiful film with a timeless perspective, but would have been better if they'd simply produced it as a story rather than loosely based on fact. Many, many people leave materialism behind and embrace a wild, simple life without dying.

@nicksynnz I'm completely aware of his mistakes but I don't think they negate his obvious high intelligence. He was a philosophical genius not because he read the works of great philosophers but because he was able to apply their teachings to his life and discover new things. He did what he himself needed to do in life. I like to think that just before he died he experienced satori and was able to die smiling. He has much to teach us still but most will not open their heart to his beauty.

Lots of young people run and hide from their dysfunctional families. Many have use drugs and alcohol as an escape / adventure, sometimes with deadly consequences. This guy used cross country travel and societal abandonment as his drug. He basically overdosed on some delusional notion that he could live a poetic solitary life in the wild unprepared. You mentioned that you wish he would have talked to you so you could teach him necessary survival skills and the proper gear he would have needed. Maybe you could advertise somewhere that you are willing to teach others these skills. Or you could find out what you need to do to become a wilderness guide..........
