Agreed. Everybody knows how to fight, aim, shoot, run, etc... But who knows how to disinfect and clean a wound, or remove a bullet safely, and later stitch that wound up? Who would know the proper fauna to gather in the zone for traditional medicine, or what to scavenge in abandoned houses for actual medicine? Doctors. Who knows how to repair a jacked car battery? A busted fuel pump? Malfunctioning engine pistons? A busted breaker box? Mechanics. Having these qualities will almost guarantee you protection in a camp or faction due to your valuable skill.

Each of us would be killed for one reason only. We are not mentally prepared. Fear and panic will kill you. When I was with the border police or the security service, fear was the reason (among other reasons) when a person failed. One evening I checked my colleague via walkie-talkie, he didn't answer me. I was afraid something had happened to him, I took my things and went looking for him. I'll cut it short - he was in a long corridor of a dilapidated building at the time, his flashlight stopped working, some animal made strange noises, he fell to his knees in fear and didn't know what to do - fear, desperation, panic - he was one of the few rational and normal-minded colleagues I met (top 3).

As people viewing it from the outside in we would probably have a somewhat better chance of surviving, albeit still bad odds. In universe there are all sorts of tall tales (some of them being true!) and misinfo surrounding the zone, so you wouldn't have good access to reliable info, one of the reasons experienced stalkers and those with comprehensive info on the zone such as Strelok are so highly valued.

To add on this, it's those tall tales, rumors and grossly over exaggerated stories that draw would be stalkers to the zone , and everyone that comes to the zone has their own personal reasons for taking that risk, be it for fame, greed or another delusional idea, hell, some probably even went based on a rumor that an artifact could help cure a loved one's terminal illness. That's the beauty of it all , even if it's not outright stated in the stalker lore, every stalker has their reasons for being there.

I had the misfortune of running into a chimaera during my first time at the red forest. Of all places it had to spawn, it had to be near the first bus. At first, I thought it was a lurker but when my Amsel Striker didn't kill it, I knew something was wrong. So I switched to my AS Val and started unloading 9x39mm bullets at it and switched to my shotgun when I run dry. I died at least 6 times in the same place that time. 10/10 would rather fight a Pseudogiant.

Yeah, Cimeras are no joke man. Their speed is super deadly. I’ve usually had good fortune while fending off a Cimera attack. Only one I remember besting me pounced on me out of nowhere the second I stepped out of Yanov Station !! Had no idea they could even spawn there.

So, being a nerd who loves stalker and someone who actually does some gun/prepper/survival stuff...the Zone is extremely fatal for people on their own. You need groups for basic protection, medicine, gear, help with food/water/shelter. You have to have good relations with people who can get you things you need like ecologists. You can't homebrew your night vision or batteries. Doctors or good medical treatment are *vital* when it comes to gunshot wounds. This is something games don't do well. Real life GSWs will kill you from infection, not just bleeding out. Holes you weren't born with aren't something you want. Humping around all day every day in large heavy armor will also gas you out, no matter how fit you are. It will also eventually start to break down your spinal column and neck. Ask GWOT vets about that. That many stalkers with that many guns and that many threats would have an enormous body count in a matter of weeks. If you're not already battle hardened, with a group and know how to keep yourselves going as a squad, you're a survival outlier.

Though the sheer scale of conflict and danger is what I was mostly thinking of, if the zone was in 40k it could consume dozens of planets and thousand of light years of space and no one may even notice for like a century or two, entire planets are eaten by the warp all the time in warhammer, and it isn’t even the craziest thing happening in that universe. I just watched this on an addon mod for anomaly, when you started talking about the blood suckers being the worst of the worst I was delighted, it reminded my why I'm the best damn stalker there is in the zone for the simple fact all mutants have a weakness, not all know them but I do. The blood suckers are terrifying to be sure BUT did you know (without mods) the blood sucker can only attack once then retreats to get enough distance to become invisible, well if you chase them they can't become invisible and can't reset their attack, making them effectively helpless if you run them down. As one of the most seasoned stalkers to ever grace the zone I'll tell you rookies a secret, the best weapon to kill the bloodsucker... A knife. PS. you left out the poltergeist.

Without emissions, depending on my supplies, I give myself a week. The difference is training and experience with combat. I've never hunted quadruped animals and doubt we could eat them anyway so food and clean water procurement are certainly issues. Don't forget TP, soap, toothpaste and other necessities. you forgot probably the most fascinating mutants of them all: the Poultergeist and the Pyrogeist. its invisible, save for the anomalous field it projects. they appear as small floating fields of electricity and bombard you with any object not tied down. their true bodies are legless, since they float around. The pyrogeist is a variant that appears like a field of orange heat haze and spawns pillars of fire like the burner anomalies.

A Battle Rifle like a FAL or DMR like the SVD would be better in my opinion, since mutants are so armored and tough. Very important thing, sewing is a very important skill to learn. Both sewing clothes as well as sewing up your ravaged body after an attack, stitching up your wounds would speed up the healing process. You described that its important to have medical supplies like bandages, TQs, etc. but you also gotta fight infection... a wound disinfectant is crucial. You could die from a small little scratch... not ideal in a world like this.

Realistically there wouldn't be that many gunfights in the zone outside of the army shooting intruders, most people would kick the bucket for anomalies or mutants, which make the zone plenty dangerous enought. That alone would make organized bandit activity pretty rare imo

You forget that ARTIFACTS are the number one thing that runs the entire economy of the zone and technically illegal to acquire but numerous organizations still pay the high blackmarket price. Essentially, the zone is almost exactly similar to the heroin smuggling in Afghanistan during the 90's and guess how bloody that was? There is a obvious reason why the zone keeps getting new stalkers or bandits despite the obvious hellscape that it is, artifacts would and probably are the most valuable thing to ever get. Other mutants of the zone Fractures: similar to zombies but hideously mutated with much long arms, running in a manner similar to a galloping horse. Degenerated zombies: Zombified stalkers who have "survived" and been exposed to the elements for so long that their clothing and flesh is now decaying away. The only thing left is a animalistic urge to kill stalkers they come across. Resilient despite their appearance, occasionally even shrugging off headshots. PsySuckers: a rare form of bloodsucker with psionic abilities similar to a psydog, making hallucinatory clones of itself as it maneuvers behind it's prey Lurkers: think smaller, less durable chimera...that hunt in packs. And do note, there are varying levels of strength among mutants, meaning you will never know just how durable they are until they are right on top of you...and there are mutants that have never been seen by still living eyes within the Zone. Tread carefully Stalker, else the Zone will take her fill of you...

More terrifying is that anomalies themselves are not static, changing locations, size, and density with each emission. What was a safe passage or rest stop may be a deathtrap the next time you try to pass by. Whole areas of the exclusion zone may become completely impassable for weeks at a time, blocking any stalker from entering and more importantly, escaping.

You WOULD survive, first of all, canonically it's not nearly as bad as the games, ESPECIALLY not the spinoff games like call of Chernobyl, not with the people trying to kill you, nor how strong the mutants are, the stronger ones also being far more rare. The radiation is also usually not a product of the zone but the leftovers of the Chernobyl accident, there's not a lot of it around either, I mean, people currently safely travel Chernobyl. Anomalies aren't as common either. Secondly, you usually come there for money, and you CAN leave when you feel like it, even if you are just a rookie. The fact that new people come, and go, also means many individuals who left spreading information about the extremely risky but potentially extremely profitable job of being a stalker, and hey, they survived so you have your shots. Finally, from the game's dialogues and flavor text, the artifacts can be far more powerful in protecting you, they aren't always in anomalies either, the game's just made it so for more fun and logical gameplay mechanics. So yeah while being pretty risky and not having great odds, you'd still have a good chance to survive, plus think logically, if you didn't, why would all of those people come there? Just to have a 99% chance to die horrifically? Clearly not. What you probably would NOT survive however is being a stalker in roadside picnic, that universe is FAAAR more brutal and unforgiving.

You are completely wrong as artifacts can be just as damaging as they are helpful. People who claim they have been to the zone are probably lying or were extremely lucky. Pretty sure the military will kill anyone coming and going from the zone if they found out about it. And people going to dangerous locations for money or treasure is not a new thing, and those that do go probably just underestimate exactly how dangerous the zone is. An interesting thing also its the fact that both in the book and in the game (keeping in mind different locations and ages and events) something common would be the fact that if you survive enough and you learn how to deal with anomalies and mutants its basically also because the zone its affecting you and mutating you, maybe not that much to look like the master from fallout or like a dark one from metro or like a blood sucker. But it will change you and if for some reason you end after making a small bounty selling artifacts and helping scientists to Reach places in the zone you May find some Day a partner that could make you happy, and sooner or later if you have children with that partner there is when mutations began to be notable. So maybe you survive the zone and get rich and have a perfect wife, you can make a company that could maintain you making research on artifacts to make weapons or other systems. The thing is you can get out of the zone, but the zone will never get out of you, and your descendants will remember you and the rest of the world that.

I'd probably just get horribly radiated. Assuming I can find a way to get past the military, I'd likely stick around the entry area and smuggle in spices and more quality food, near everyone complains about food quality and being miserable due to not eating enough or well. I know a lot of people would appreciate things like tea and candy, too, I'd get really rich and help stalkers actually tooled for the Zone to survive better by being on top of their game. Actually in the zone, I'd probably just get in a ton of trouble, if I wasn't with the ecologists or enough loners I'd be easy prey.

Speaking of the Controller, their portrayal in the CoP mod "Gunslinger" takes a whole new twist to attacking your mind; if you get within the attack radius of the controller, it will literally force you to commit suicide with your pistol or your knife, and you can even see the player struggle against it until they either die or get far enough form the controller. I like to think it's another subspecies or a mutation within the controller mutation where instead of barraging the brain with waves of psionic energy, this kind of controller controls your actions against your own will, literally forcing you to watch you kill yourself.

I think that to syrvive in the Zone you need to be extreamly cautious about your enviorement, as you said, Zone defy normal logic and laws of physics, so you could spot anything out of ordinary, basically best weapon imo is 12 ga shotgun because: ammo is cheap, it has many variants: slug for big game, sabots, darts, incendiary rounds etc. As a sidearm I would recomend something bigger than 9mm because most mutants above dogs and tuskano are preatty thick skin so 9mm would be for boars like mosquito bite, so better to start with .44 magnum rounds .50 action express, .45 ACP. Be aware of your surroundings, listen carefoully, look around you, be slow and methodical, its not a race but struggle to survive. Remember imortant details the way that you've passed, placement of anomalies dangerous spots, because you don't want to fall into electro while running from bloodsucker, you can actually lure the bloodsucker into anomaly and use it as a trap. When using a firearm, be aware that you will focus attention of everything around you with your noisy shots, so don't stay in one spot or near it after a gunfight. And finally measure your capabillities to needs, if you see sings that mutants might be around ( things like dead carcasses, poop, markings on enviroment) or other stalkers (found camps, trash, gun casings pointing that gunfight had place) ask yourself if your goal is worth it or you want to find abother way around. OOO I see you are man of good choices so you dont have AKs but VZ 58. Good choice in normal condition, bad choice in Zone- we dont use AKs mags in it and it is almost imposible to convert other mag to fit. I would use most generic weapon - ar style or ak. 4:40 - Actually, the best weapon for dealing with a lot of mutants isn't to use an assault rifle. The best weapon is actually a good, reliable pump-action or semi-auto shotgun because you're less likely to waste ammunition. Bullets are hard enough to come by as it is. Whatever weapon you choose, make sure it's of a design that has a reputation for durability. The Zone is harsh on everything, so weapons with maximum reliability mean one less thing to worry about. Also, Chimeras have a weak spot - their spines. Aim directly down into it and you can potentially kill it in one or two shots.

Mutants wise it depends on which mod you're playing. A.R.E.A.'s mutants I find especially brutal. They made it so breaking line of sight with a Controller doesn't protect you from his powers, instead it's based on range and that range is large. Good luck bringing that down early game without scoped weapons.

If I were to attempt to survive. First and foremost, I would attempt to get into contact with escorts who could help me get into the zone for a certain price. After that? I’d try and save up as much as I possibly could before I’d enter into the zone, likely either ending up in the Cordon, or Swamps. I’d use the money I’d saved for basic equipment from one of the merchants there. Preferably a sawn-off shotgun, and a 5.45 rifle, alongside a Sunrise Suit, or atleast some kind of leather jacket. Then some canned food, bottled water, and medical supplies. After that? I’d try and join up with one of the factions in the area. Or tag along with one of the many wandering squads of Stalkers, and follow them to one of the Ecologist bases. The Ecologists are some of the most well connected people in the zone. Cash flows through them like a river, and hardly anyone would take potshots at them. All I’d be left to worry about would be the environment, as I’d work under them for the remainder of my time.
