Intro to Buddhism: The Four Noble Truths (Why do we Suffer?)

Perhaps some will find it helpful to ponder the following. I translate the first noble truth as: "The unenlightened life is suffering." (After all, after Siddhartha attained enlightenment under the bodhi tree, he transcended suffering; then, in founding the sangha, he spent the next 45 years , through his example and teachings, showing how to radically diminish suffering in the world., the fourth noble truth -- The 8-Fold Path -- being the primary method for accomplishing such diminishment.) I see the third noble truth (nirvana) as indicating that life's underlying energy is in fact (what might be called) bliss-wisdom-grace. Also, insofar as the second noble truth asserts that the cause of suffering is ignorance, it is ignorance of the bliss-wisdom-grace that grew us in the womb and sustains all life. Accordingly, the problem is not desire. The problem is excessive and misdirected desires (cravings and attachments arising from ignorance (avidya). And, finally, in order not to confuse samsara (the ceaseless change called anicca) with suffering (dukkha), it is best to remember that Siddhartha Gautama Shakyamuni Buddha achieved, and exemplified, nirvana IN samsara, and thus he continues to act as an inspirational paradigm for our own personal (and ultimately social) evolution (through the practice of kindness, generosity, humility, compassion, cooperation, equanimity, learning, service, etc.).
