Goes over the basics of these 3 things to get you going on your first projects. I have some more advanced videos on here as well, with lots more to come!
If you're new to Cubase, I highly recommend going the Cubase Users group on Facebook. The moderator is great, and the advice on there is like no other place I've seen. I'll try to help people after they post problems, but before I can chime in 5 other people have already posted the solution!

Thanks Jef. It's all very clear. With external devices, I remember having to calculate the delay from the tempo, which was a nuisance it one changed their mind half way through. I used the tempo estimator, but it said the 112 pbm [from an old tape recording] was about 121 bpm. It would have been better to tap it out.

Great job on the tutorial specially on the sound mixing and adding effects. I'm new to Cubase and your comprehensive guide in deploying these effects gave me some understanding as to how to utilize these functionalities. I've used Ableton Live for months now but the issue I'm having with it is the latency problem it's having. I've twicked the controls as much as I could and even though the software has automatic Warping capabilities, it's still a nagging piece of the editing. My HP Laptop has more than enough processing power but the design of the Ableton software still needs more in-depth configuration through coding. The thing I like Cubase is that when I'm recording live with my Yamaha MX88 Keyboard, the drums, piano, and etc. seem to be able to play my recording in sync together with all the sounds I recorded. I like to read the Cubase instruction manual but I learned faster when watching Video Tutorial. So, again, great job.

This 3-piece series on Cubase Basics helped me fill up some gaps in my basic knowledge. As a musician trying to get my head around production a bit more this was very helpful. I was wondering if - in addition to this series - you are planning on doing a tutorial on the basics of MIDI in Cubase. I work with the MK3 as well and I know you did a video on this as well. But instead of knowing how to setup the MIDI, it would be helpful to understand how it works and why etc.. Anyway, thanks a lot for your work so far!
@jefgibbons

Thanks Carlos! Do you mean working with MIDI in Cubase with actual hardware synths?
@carloszoritadiaz5369
@carloszoritadiaz5369 4 жыл бұрын
@@jefgibbons Thanks for your reply! What I think I actually mean has to do with understanding how MIDI-routing works. For example: I used your video 'Maschine Cubase Setup Tutorial (2018)' to be able to work with my MK3 in Cubase. Even though I can set up my MK3 to work with Cubase most of the times by following the steps in the video, I don't understand the thinking process behind the steps. So whenever something isn't working I have no clue on why that is. I'm curious about how this whole routing works so that I understand how to set up these things instead of just following steps. A video giving more insight into this would be very helpful for me personally :)

It's great to get things from the beginning. I've had a gap of about 15 years. I don't remember the EQs having an exact note given - this must be new. [I've got old effects modules, I haven't used for over 20 years. I remember having to do maths to calculate how long a reverb had to be at a specific bpm! So, it had to be re-calculated if felt the pbm had to be changed. Things are so easy now.] I now know what to do with some of the not-so-good sampled instruments where there's a terrible volume change with certain sounds - often the lower notes of a double bass. I don't have Komplete 13 yet. I'm sure those samples will be better EQed along the keyboard. {I talked about Komplete 13 UCE about 3 weeks ago. The advert says, 900+GB of content - includes 190+ products and 115,000 sounds - all loaded onto a convenient installation drive. I'm not that computer literate - to me that sounds like the 900+GB is on an external hard drive, though you said I'd have to download instruments as I need them. I don't trust the Internet continuing for ever, it's got to crash. I'd like to go 'off the grid'. I'll phone the shop [in Sydney, Australia] and ask. I'd still make a back-up on another hard drive.} Thanks for your support. I like to also get a vocoder and I just saw a Melodyne demo. Would I need to get both Ovox and Celemony - for advanced vocal editing/correction as well as vocoder effects, or does Celemony do vocoder stuff as well? [We're likely to continually getting over 40° C, drought and fires here. I'd like to have an electric generator and underground bunker with all my music software readily available. Climate change is so noticeable when your old enough to remember when it was very green and wet here 40 years ago.]

Hello, is there a way in Cubase that I could add effects like saturation , chorus, or any other effect just to the delay? not to the whole signal but just to the delay effect? I have tried with fx channels, sending the fx channel with the delay to a separate fx channel with the distortion but the main signal (vocal) always gets distorted, no luck.

Hi Jeff ! Thank u for all education in Cubase. I've worked in Cubase 5 for 11 years and now i have updated my self a little bit.... Eeee, a VERY BIG bit if i might say because i didn't recognise much in my new version Cubase 10 artist. Now to my question: I think i have made a misstake because one of the primary tools for choosing a new version was that i have seen that you can produce vocal choir of just one voice, ( hope u understand my bad English). Now when i try to do this with help from you and other youtube channels i´ve understand that i need PRO because Variaudio doesn't come with 10 Artist. Is this i right? and if so, can i buy variaudio and put it in my artist?

Best video tutorials I have seen to date! Hi Jef, further to my direct email to you, have you any videos planned on recording audio as opposed to midi. I have a simple ( probably stupid ) question - when recording additional tracks (while listening to playback from track 1) how do you record a second audio track without the audio from the first also recording, same applies when using a click during audio recording ? Given the Cubase User Manual stretches to 1162 pages how many tutorial videos are you planning?
@jefgibbons
@jefgibbons 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike! The only thing I can think of is that you are recording the second track with your speakers on, so the sound is getting picked up by the mic. Is that maybe the case? You'll definitely need a pair of headphones for recording. If not, you have a weird routing thing going on that we'll have to sort out!
@CREATIVEEYEMUSIC
@CREATIVEEYEMUSIC 4 жыл бұрын
@@jefgibbons Hi Jef, thanks for replying. There are no mic's involved other than the iMac's internal mic as simply recording synths. I have just rigged up an audio/midi interface so going to play around with that and see how I get on. Cheers Mike

@@CREATIVEEYEMUSIC Check your sound card settings in the DAW!!! You need to make sure the input is set for the one you're trying to record from and NOT set for stereo mix. I'm about 99% sure this is your issue. When it is set for recording from stereo mix, your DAW will record everything that your hear coming from your speakers. It's been a few months since you asked your question, so hopefully you already figured it out, or that this will help you do that!

Thanks again for your great videos, Jeff. As a previous Logic user for years, I tried many times to switch to Cubase, but found it too difficult to grasp. Because of your videos I am using Cubase now on a daily basis.Question about routing: Should the reverb always go to the audio out or should it be routed back into the instrument? I read different theories on this.
@jefgibbons
@jefgibbons 5 жыл бұрын
+André van Haren so glad to hear that! As for routing, the default setting of the fox track going to the audio out is the way it’s done. I can’t get my brain around routing it to the instrument as you said, I might be reading it wrong though. Do you have a link to that suggestion? Might be something new for me!

@@jefgibbons It is something I heard about in a course I did, but always found it a little confusing. In a PDF I have here, this is what it says: "In order to set up the reverb with your groups, you have to add the room reverbs (one for each group) as FX tracks, then SEND the output from each instrument track into the corresponding reverb, and then set the OUTPUT of the reverb FX tracks to go into the relevant group, NOT the stereo output."
