In his youth, he was in the first group of monks trained at Rumtek Monastery in Sikkim, India and also served as attendant to the Sixteenth Karmapa. Rinpoche founded and leads the Nalandabodhi network of meditation centers.
Dzogchen meditation is a form of Tibetan Buddhist meditation that emphasizes the direct realization of one's true nature or essence. It is often considered the highest or most advanced form of meditation in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition.
The origins of Dzogchen can be traced back to the ancient Indian teachings of Dzogchen's predecessor, Atiyoga or the "primordial yoga," which dates back to at least the 8th century. These teachings were brought to Tibet in the 8th century by the Indian teacher Padmasambhava and were later developed and expanded upon by Tibetan masters.
The term "Dzogchen" means "Great Perfection" or "Great Completion" in Tibetan and is considered to be the pinnacle of the nine vehicles of Tibetan Buddhism. It is based on the teachings of the Nyingma school, the oldest school of Tibetan Buddhism, which places great emphasis on meditation and the direct experience of enlightenment.
In Dzogchen meditation, practitioners are taught to recognize and rest in the innate nature of their mind, which is said to be pure and free from any kind of conditioning or defilements. The practice involves various techniques such as mindfulness, visualization, and mantra recitation, but the ultimate goal is to directly experience the nature of mind itself, beyond conceptual thoughts and dualistic perceptions.
Mahamudra meditation is a type of meditation practice that is associated with the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. It is often described as a form of "direct realization" meditation, which means that the goal is to directly experience the nature of mind itself, without relying on conceptual thought or analysis.
The term "mahamudra" is derived from two Sanskrit words: "maha," which means "great," and "mudra," which can be translated as "seal" or "gesture." In the context of meditation, mahamudra refers to a state of consciousness that is said to be beyond all concepts and dualities.
The origins of mahamudra meditation can be traced back to the Indian Buddhist tradition, specifically to the teachings of the great Indian yogi Tilopa, who is considered to be the founder of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. Tilopa transmitted his teachings to his disciple Naropa, who in turn passed them on to a succession of masters, including Marpa, Milarepa, and Gampopa.
The Kagyu lineage is known for its emphasis on meditation and the direct transmission of teachings from master to student. Mahamudra meditation is one of the main practices within the Kagyu tradition, and it is often considered to be the ultimate goal of spiritual practice. In addition to the Kagyu lineage, mahamudra meditation is also practiced within other Tibetan Buddhist schools, including the Nyingma and Sakya lineages.

I love this. One thing I wish I understood better. I thought nirvana was the end of suffering, victory over mara, the cessation of rebirth. That sounds like more than a concept to me. I'll keep listening. 🙏
