Ethics also refers to our values and duty/ obligation. Meta ethics contains 2 approaches, cognitivism and non-cognitivism. Cognitivism is moral judgments being true or false, and non-cognitivism is that they are neither true nor false. great video! learned a lot.

This video covers the basics of ethics. It explores what ethics is, which is essentially the study of what's right and wrong. It also touches on different aspects of this field, like the difference between what's legal and what's moral, and it even delves into meta-ethics, which is about the nature of ethics itself. In meta-ethics, they ponder where our sense of right and wrong comes from - whether it's something that existed before humans or if we humans made it up. What's interesting is that within the debate, there are different groups, like those who believe there are objective moral truths (the realists) and those who think it's more about personal feelings and opinions (the non-realists). It's quite a diverse field! Akshita Pinapaty

This video describes the basics of ethics and builds upon this knowledge as the video progresses. It explains that ethics refers to our obligations to both future and current generations and to ourselves as well as the connections between good or bad deeds and a good or bad life. A part of the video that I found intriguing was that even though something is legal, doesn't mean it is moral (e.g. slavery, tobacco products, etc.). It makes me wonder how many immoral yet legal practices and behaviors exist. Meta-ethics, or the branch of ethics that focuses on the natural “right” opinion or “nature of moral judgment”. Meta-ethics involves the question, “What should we do?” Normative Ethics leads to more curious questions about the content of “goodness” and how to distinguish between right and wrong. We can assume the majority would like to rely on the assumption that all people will act morally good since there are “rules” and it is irrational to break said rules due to the desire to avoid self-sabotage behavior. Although the world isn’t perfect, ethics helps provide guidelines on behavior. - Genevieve Kestler-DeWan (PL-300-85A)

This video did a great job at helping me understand Cognitivism and the branches it’s subdivided into along with how it differs from Non-Cognitivism. Under Cognitivism, Realism takes the view that right and wrong are based on certain objective properties of the world that we exist in, while Anti-Realism takes the view that morality is invented and moral properties do not exist. Each side is then broken down even further into Naturalism vs Non-Naturalism, and Subjectivism/Nihilism. I am learning about Nihilism in another class as well so it was interesting to see the theory again. - Jasmine Grams

After hearing how the study of ethics has led to the discovery of these divisions, I question how many people would classify themselves in one or more of these categories. I see myself as more of a nihilist with traits that bleed into the naturalist side of ethics. Covering how the morally "good" and the morally "evil" are actually intertwined, especially when delving into the divisions of meta-ethics, is really great because it can help one or more people sit back and try to view their morality from both sides. It could be something really cool if there was an anonymous ethics questionnaire or game (less than 10 questions, obviously) where the class could see where people stand (percentage-wise) on viewpoints -- in a way it could help with morality standpoints as it would be a great way to spark critical thinking. -Brian

The video explains that Ethics is about the value of good/evil and duty of our obligation, so ethics study many different question an example given "How should we live?". Now when it comes to legality and morality keep them separate, moral question are distinct from legal question. another topic to keep separate is convenience and moral reasons, for an example given slavery their are those who benefited from slavery (owners) but convenience does not tell you what is morally right. Other two concept to keep separate are description and Prescription, description is of nature does not come with built in moral value. It is wrong to move a fact to a value for instant human being can eat meat which is a bio fact coming up with a moral conclusion that its right to do it but it doesn't follow that they ought to be eating meat. - Chelsea Siguachi (PL-300-85A)

This video offers a comprehensive introduction to ethics, covering its foundational principles of discerning right from wrong. It also explores different dimensions within this field, including the contrast between what is legally permissible and what is morally acceptable, as well as delving into meta-ethics, which investigates the fundamental nature of ethics itself.

The video has really made me understand the difference between Cognitivism and Non-Cognitivism (Meta- Ethics). Being able to differentiate real vs reality, we are able to understand certain decisions and see them in a positive or negative light. The word "Ethics" as well plays a huge role in defining what is morally wrong or right. As individuals we sometimes pick evil over good as we tend to think only for ourselves. Some issues may seem legal, but are they truly ethical? Great video!

Ethics plays a crucial role in guiding our actions and decisions and shaping us as individuals and as a society. It emphasizes what is right or wrong, good or evil, and our responsibilities in different situations. The debate between legality and morality is also discussed, with the reminder that something being legal doesn't always make it the right thing to do. It mentions Meta-Ethics and the difference between cognitivism and non-cognitivism in ethics. Cognitivists have realists and anti-realists, while non-cognitivists differ on the nature and function of moral language. This ongoing debate highlights the ethical reasoning and the challenges involved in defining and justifying moral principles. Jaydah Moody PL-300-85A

Ethics, as explained in the lecture, is the study of moral principles that guide people's choices and actions. Ethics help us answer questions about what's morally "good" or "evil", and the difference between value and morality. As learned, ethics encompasses four main areas: Value theory, Normative ethics, Metaethics, and Applied ethics. Value theory explores what holds intrinsic value and defines a good life, considering perspectives like happiness, desires fulfilled, individual and collective goods, and virtues. Normative ethics establishes conduct standards, examining if actions should be judged by their consequences (consequentialism) or adherence to moral rules (deontological ethics). Metaethics delves into the philosophy behind moral beliefs and their origins. Finally, Applied ethics employs these theories to address real-world issues and dilemmas.

This video discusses basic concepts of Ethics. It explains the study of Ethics, which is the branch of philosophy that studies morality as well as touches on several branches within this study. For example, the video discussed Legality vs. Morality and how moral questions are distinct from legal questions. It also mentions Meta Ethics which is a branch of Ethics that discusses the nature of Ethics. Such as the origin of morality, and if right and wrong is something that was pre-existing or something human beings invented. I found the Cognitivism vs. Non-Cognitivism approaches in Meta-Ethics interesting because there were many different branches within each approach such as the realists vs. non-realists in the Cognitivism approach.

Ethics is about Value (good or evil) and Duty (what I ought to do), ethics asks questions that could guide how we live our day to day lives and how we as a human species should move forward. Legality vs Morality is another large debate. Things that are legal are not always moral. There are many different ways to view ethics, such as cognitivism (judgements can be true or false) versus Non-Cognitivism (moral statements can not be true or false) - Selma Ruiz PL-300-85A

The video explains that Ethics is about the value of good and evil . Our values, principles, and purpose are what give us a sense of what’s good, right, and meaningful in our lives. They serve as a reference point for all the possible courses of action we could choose. On this definition, an ethical decision is one made based on reflection about the things we think are important and that is consistent with those belief. Many People find morality extremely useful. Not everyone has the time and training to reflect on the kind of life they want to live, considering all the different combinations of values, principles, and purposes. When it comes to legality and morality keep them separate, moral question are distinct from legal question. Other two concept to keep separate are description and prescription. Descriptive ethics describes what moral beliefs exist. Prescriptive ethics argues what moral beliefs people ought to have, or it attempts to say what is in fact right and wrong. Description is of nature does not come with built in moral value. - Juanita Ponce (PL-300-85A)

The video delves into the fundamental principles of Ethics, a branch of philosophy that explores morality. It highlights various aspects within this field, including the distinction between Legality and Morality. Notably, it underscores that moral questions are separate from legal ones, emphasizing that just because something is legal doesn't necessarily make it morally right. The video also introduces Meta-Ethics, a branch of Ethics focused on the nature of morality itself. It ponders intriguing questions like the origin of morality, debating whether it's an inherent concept or a human invention. Within Meta-Ethics, it examines Cognitivism and Non-Cognitivism, two contrasting approaches. Cognitivism asserts that moral judgments can be true or false, leading to further subdivisions like realists vs. non-realists. In essence, the video provides a comprehensive overview of Ethics, exploring its various branches and thought-provoking concepts. Seoyeon Jeong : PL-300-85A

The Video attempts to explain ethics in regards to how we as an individual should live, decide between right and wrong and our moral obligation to people around us. One of the concept that intrigues me is how while certain things can be legal, doesn't mean they are moral. Besides the explained example of child labour and slavery, others I could think of is cheating or picking up anything that someone might have dropped such as money etc. But the act being unethical or ethical might be different based on different people. As Meta ethics explains how cognitivism in some leads them to have a stand as either true or false in contrary non cognitivists remain a neutral stand instead of choosing a right or wrong stand. - Aastha Rawat (PL-300-85A)

Finley Heilers: Ethics is used to study morality. Ethics is about value (good vs bad) and duty/obligations. Legality does not = morality. Just because something is convenient for certain people does not make that thing ethical. Both statistics and ethics become irrelevant when the topic of ethics is being discussed. Just because something happens in nature does not make it ethical. Normative ethics is the branch of ethics that brings on more theories. Teleological ethics proposes theories based on the outcome of actions while deontological ethics propose theories that try to describe universal rules. Egoism is focused on oneself while utilitarianism is focused on humans as a whole. Deontological theories ask what one's duty to others is. Meta Ethics is analyzing ethics itself. Where do value and duty come from? What about right and wrong? Do they truly exist? These are all questions asked by meta ethics. Cognitivism argues that ethical choices can be true or false. Realists believe that moral properties exist while anti-realists do not think this. Non-cognitivism means that moral statements can neither be true nor false. Applied ethics tries to apply ethics to real world situations.

The video discusses the core ideas of ethics, a field of philosophy that examines morality. It draws attention to a number of issues in this area, such as the division between morality and law. Notably, it emphasizes that moral concerns are distinct from legal ones and that something is not necessarily ethically right just because it is legal. In the movie, Meta-Ethics, a subfield of ethics that examines the foundations of morality, is also introduced. It considers fascinating issues like the nature of morality, discussing whether it is an innate idea or a creation of humans. It addresses Cognitivism and Non-Cognitivism, two opposing perspectives, within Meta-Ethics. Moral judgments, according to cognitivism, can be true or incorrect, which further divides people into realists and non-realists. Essentially, the film offers a thorough review of ethics, examining its numerous branches and interesting ideas. Vandit Rana : PL-300-85A

There are 4 areas in Ethics, such as value theory, normative ethics, metaethics, and applied ethics. There are 2 approaches in ethics, such as deontological, which means there is a universal rule, and teleological, value is based on the outcome of actions. Teleological includes ethical egoism and utilitarianism. Meta-ethics has 2 approaches; cognitivism and non-cognitivism. Cognitivism asserts moral judgement can be true or false. Ethics can be boiled down to what it is considered right and wrong, aside from what is legal and illegal. This can be looked at from a point of cognitivism and non-cognitivism.

The video explores the foundational ideas of ethics, a field of philosophy that studies morality. It makes a distinction between legality and morality, highlighting the fact that being legal does not imply being moral. Our judgments and behaviors are governed by a discipline called ethics, which shapes both people and society. It emphasizes duties in many circumstances, as well as right and wrong, good and evil. The key notions in the current meta-ethical dispute between legality and morality are cognitivism and non-cognitivism. Value theory, normative ethics, metaethics, and applied ethics are the four primary subfields of ethics. This video examines ethics, the role it plays in determining behavior, and the conflict between morality and law. CATHERINE GRULLON (PL-300-85A)
