So many compliments to give I don't know if i can put it in one comment. Here I am trying to learn LaTeX for my physics courses this year, and i happen upon your first video in the series. Already INSANELY informative, lots of great tips and tricks, very beginner friendly, really got me excited about learning how to use LaTeX more. THEN i just so happen to see you somewhat recently post THIS and its 10X BETTER THAN THE FIRST ONE WHICH WAS ALREADY SO GOOD?! You really stepped up the video quality too from last year. Its definitely noticeable and appreciated and gives the video that extra smoothness and polish. The subtle camera movements to focus in on the important bits are *chefs kiss*. Not to mention you yourself are engaging and funny at the same time to match the utility of the content. Way to go, earned my sub, really hope you keep it up!

and also maybe real analysis, complex analysis, tensors, etc. That's if you know all that. Some of those mathematical subjects has close ties to theoretical physics. @@DrTrefor Awesome. It would be great if you made a lecture series on these advanced mathematical subjects. What in particular did you study when you were in the physics world?
@elltwo83933 жыл бұрын
As far as I know, the math with the closest ties to quantum stuff in physics is operator algebras/operator theory, which is a beautiful subject in its own right and contains one of my favourite theorems (the Gelfand-Naimark transform which gives a contravariant equivalence between the category of compact Hausdorff spaces and the category of commutative unital C*-algebras), but probably requires too much background knowledge to fully understand (i.e. measures and integration as well as basic functional analysis) for it to be accessible in a KZbin series right out of the gate.
@StaticBlaster3 жыл бұрын
@@elltwo8393 Cool. And of course probability theory too. These sound extremely advanced but nonetheless very interesting. Update: Oh yeah and also lie algebras and lie groups which also has ties to fractal mathematics, I think.

I like your theorem numbering by Section --how do you do the same with equation, figure and table numbering, please?
@DrTrefor3 жыл бұрын
Ah great question, should have put that one in. There is a command (needs amsmath) and goes within the preable: umberwithin{equation}{section}. The first braces say the object you are want to number and the second what you use to do the numbering (could be chapter or subsection or whatever else).

Hello Dr. Trefor...Is LaTeX recommended for writing entire papers, dissertations, etc over Word or is it better suited for just writing equations and then inserting them into Word or similar word processor? It would seem that Word would be more efficient in terms of formatting the text portions of papers. Perhaps I am wrong though.

Why is the figure put above the section it's in? How can I position it where I want it to be?
@DrTrefor2 жыл бұрын
By default, it lets LaTeX decide the best way to visually display it on the page, but yes you can force it to an exact location if you want. But sometimes this has weird effects like an awkward pagebreak so it is usually the LAST thing I do when polishing a document.

Out of curiosity, what is your opinion on the other TeX overlays (e.g. ConTeXT, LuaTeX, XeLaTex)? I know LaTeX well enough, but occasionally it's gotten annoying if I ever want to do non-standard formatting. Someone told me that ConTeXT is better for that type of stuff but I haven't used it yet.
@DrTrefor3 жыл бұрын
Honestly I haven't used either of them, but the general sense I have is each has some aspects that it does particularly well, and if that aspect is something you really care about then it might be worth it. But the default is to stick with vanilla.
@thomasgebert61193 жыл бұрын
@@DrTrefor Fair enough. For 99% of stuff, LaTeX is fine (well, Pandoc->LaTeX anyway), but occasionally I've had to do more elaborate stuff, and I've found CSL to be extremely annoying, and I've never really gotten the hang of it.
