A good clean well oiled stone really cuts nice. Keeping them cleaned and not loaded up makes all the difference.

I went on a website to buy a Norton Combination Crystolon Stone and it did not say to use oil or water. I also watched another video where somebody sharpened a knife using a combination crystolon stone using nothing. My question is... What should I do? Dry-Water or Oil???
@garfoonga16 күн бұрын
Usually a stone will come with a small paper that outlines its proper use. Rule of thumb though, if its called an oil stone, put oil on it. Even if it isnt required, you wont harm the stone or knife. Just be sure whether you have an oil stone or water stone. Edit. Mineral oil is best.

I've been a chef for about 20 years and love sharpening my knives. I recently found an old oil tri-stone that I thought I'd lost after about 5 years and was wondering if you have any tips on bringing my stones back. I'd love to use them again, thanks!
@NortonAbrasives4 жыл бұрын
You should be able to get your stones back to good working order with a little bit of cleaning. We recommend cleaning it with a solvent like kerosene or paint thinner and a small brush to open the surface. If the stones are severely damaged we offer replacement stones that can be installed in your tri-stone base.

I would like to know the best method to avoid load up and glazing the oil stones
@NortonAbrasives4 жыл бұрын
You should always use a lubricant like oil or water when you sharpen to minimize loading. If your stone does get loaded and glazed over we recommend cleaning it with a solvent like kerosene or paint thinner and a small brush to open the surface.

Yes, it's fine to use oil with the stones. However, once you've used oil on a stone, you should always use oil with that stone. This is what declares Shapton's site . So Should I use a diamond stone just with oil to flat or clean it? After I can't more use water on rhe diamind stone?

Hi I found my dads OLD prob 80 yrs old he has passed so has not been used 30 yrs still in original box. Norton India Oilstone. Could I use it to sharpen my kitchen knives and would I clean it with dawn and what type of oil would I use, thanks
@NortonAbrasives4 жыл бұрын
Great find! Yes, you can certainly use this stone to sharpen your kitchen knives. Dawn should work to clean up any oil/metal residue on the stone, or you can use any other degreaser, like kerosene. A small brush will help to open up the surface. When you are ready to start sharpening, you can use any light grade mineral oil as a lubricant. We sell Norton brand sharpening oil - a formulation that works especially well for sharpening - but you can certainly successfully sharpen with other types of mineral oil.

Can you run Norton India stones through a normal dishwasher cycle to clean them?
@trishdawson21563 жыл бұрын
Most Norton stones are sold impregnated with oil. The heat of a dishwasher will make the oil quite runny and flow out of the stone. You will likely have some oil residue in your dishwasher and no oil left in your stone

Also would ,and this may sound very strange would olive oil work?
@NortonNice4 жыл бұрын
I'm no expert, but here is my two cents: Olive oil may be a little too thick (viscous). Also, olive oil, being a food product, may turn rancid and oxidize if exposed to air for too long. I've had good luck with food-grade mineral oil, which can be found fairly easily. It seems to me that the key to a good oil is finding one that will suspend the tiny steel particles shed from the blade. If the oil is too thin, the particles will settle into the stone and make it dirty. If the oil is too thick, it might not lubricate well enough.

I'm going to tend to believe a guy who works for the outfit but just have to say a _lot_ of folks who seem to know what they're doing say don't don't don't use soap or detergent. They never say why, whether they've had bad experiences or it's just something their dads always told them or what.
@NortonAbrasives3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the comment. It really comes down to preference and what provides you with the best results you are looking for. We advise using a degreaser or a small amount dish soap to clean the surface in order to clean off extra oil/lubricant in wet sharpening, but to also clean off the swarf (metal filings) for those that sharpen dry. This process could reduce some of the initial oil impregnated into the stone, but this is countered by simply adding some extra oil once cleaned. If possible, experiment to see what gives you the best results and we would love to hear back!”
