I have evolved to where I use 003 almost exclusively because it gives the drawing a photographic look that I want. That said, I do use 005 and even 01 to do areas that are mostly black.

I love this so much thank you for video:) I wish you would do something simple for people like me that are just starting. I am doing circles right now lol. I used the 05 on all of it but now I know to start with 01 and do 05 for the dark parts. I am not an artist so have to learn more about shading the art I did was digital art which is way different so trying something new is wonderful. Thank you again for the video.

this is rad but i say do the whole thing in 003 micron it it probably doubles the time or maybe even more than it takes but the precision and level of detail is without comparison.

I would agree Danny, but the challenge is the deep blacks. I've done a rhino with almost exclusively 005 and 003, but it was so light that it was just a challenge. You are certainly right about the detail though.

@@jimreed9721 righton dude. do you have any suggestions for when you make the face so dark it almost changes the ethnicity of the subject? Of course I tried to make everything else darker but it only did so much.

@@TomisaLami I've found the key to be shadows. you can make them as dark as you'd like as long as your lighted sections are still bright. Also, I've found that the eyes, nose and lips are more of a key to ethnicity than the actual shading. If you get the proportions right, it'll work out.

@@jimreed9721 gotcha but like I've already made the face so dark does not seem like a white child. Maybe a white child that was playing in the dirt. I don't know maybe I just need to start over. Thank you for the advice though.

Hey now it's lowdown so I don't got those pens so can I do it with normal pens????? Plz reply

Absolutely. The trick is to use. a pen that flows. A fountain pen works well. Felt tips are fine. Ball point pens are not the best (in my experience because the ink needs to roll on instead of simply flowing). Try anything. Experiment. Who knows, you might find something better.

Thanks for the video Jim. What type of paper do you use? Can this be done with standard computer paper?
@jimreed9721
@jimreed9721 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely! I like using Bristol Smooth because it soaks into the paper a little bit better. Less chance of smearing.

Can you explain where you used the 05 and the 005? I assume the thicker 05 on the darkest spots, but this wasn’t clear to me.
@jimreed9721
@jimreed9721 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Gene! You're right! The 05 is a much thicker diameter nib, so it makes larger spots making it much more "textured." You are able to create bold areas easier. The tiny 005 is used for details, but also areas that I want to make a lighter tone.
