Introdans | Kaash | choreografie Akram Khan

Met veel trots presenteert Introdans de Introdans-première van Kaash van Akram Khan. De Brits-Bengaalse Khan maakt deel uit van de internationale top van meest succesvolle en meest gevraagde eigentijdse choreografen. Zijn productie Kaash, die in 2002 Khans doorbraak inluidde, stond al jaren op de verlanglijst van artistiek directeur Roel Voorintholt. Er zijn, buiten Khans eigen groep, wereldwijd maar twee andere gezelschappen die het werk mogen uitvoeren. Khan bouwt in zijn choreografieën op indrukwekkende wijze bruggen tussen de klassieke Indiase kathakdans en hedendaagse dansstijlen. Voor Kaash (dat in het Hindi ‘als’ betekent) putte hij inspiratie uit de scheppende én vernietigende kracht van de Hindoegod Shiva. In het uiterst dynamische werk laten de dansers de strakke geometrische patronen ademen en zuigen, met als blikvangers armen die scherp door de lucht snijden. De dansers lijken daarbij zowel beschermd als belaagd te worden door het zwarte vierkant op de achtergrond. Dit ‘gapende gat’, begin van alles of niets, is een decorontwerp van niemand minder dan beeldend kunstenaar Anish Kapoor, winnaar van onder meer de prestigieuze Turner Prize. De opzwepende muziek voor Kaash werd gecomponeerd door Nitin Sawhney, die eerder samenwerkte met onder anderen Paul McCartney en Sting. Kaash werd in 2002 onderscheiden met de Britse Critics’ Circle National Dance Award voor ‘Best modern choreography’.

With great pride Introdans presents the Introdans premiere of Kaash by Akram Khan. The British-Bengali Khan is one of the most successful and in-demand top international choreographers in the field of contemporary dance. His production Kaash, which heralded Khan’s breakthrough in 2002, has been on the wish list of artistic director Voorintholt for many years. Apart from Khan’s own group, there are only two other companies worldwide that are permitted to perform this work. In his choreographies Khan impressively builds bridges between classical Indian Kathak dance and contemporary dance styles. When making Kaash (which means ‘what if’ in Hindi) he drew inspiration from the creative and destructive powers of the Hindu god Shiva. In the highly dynamic work the dancers let the tautly geometric patterns expand and contract, punctuated by arms slicing sharply through the air. At the same time, the dancers seem to be both protected and attacked by the black square in the background. This ‘gaping hole’, the start of everything or nothing, is a stage design by no one less than the visual artist Anish Kapoor, winner of the prestigious Turner Prize among other awards. The rousing music for Kaash was composed by Nitin Sawhney, who has previously worked with other musicians such as Paul McCartney and Sting. In 2002 Kaash was awarded the British Critics’ Circle National Dance Award for ‘Best modern choreography’.
