Honestly most of us Indians don’t give a fuck either way. Covid + recent drug scandals have FINALLY shown at least some Indians that these actor/model types are just entertainers with no real worth. Most Indian models (in the Indian market too) are very plain. Go onto any high end Indian designer’s website and the models will be ugly. They’re only tall, that’s it! Now Bollywood is lazy and casts a lot of ex “models” directly from agencies since they’re willing to expose and sleep around. Hence most actresses today also have the same boyish tall bodies with very plain faces.

I still remembered when Lakshmi Menon debuted at Hermes and Givenchy and fronted the Givenchy campaigns twice. As well as that memorable Hermes campaign. Riccardo Tisci loved her. That was heaven. Just love her allure and mysterious look. Wish she was everywhere during her time on the runways. Pooja Mor is also another stunner though she became infamous for her fall during her debut Givenchy show. One model I think who couldve made it in Paris and the major runways but didnt is Jyothsna chakravarthy. She debuted at the Chanel Bombay-Paris show but I guess that was a one time thing and she was selected by Karl Lagerfeld only for that. I mean she had the high fashion look, almost like a refined Indian version of Daphne Groeneveld. Maybe she didnt want to be on the major runways...who knows.

Can we talk about how ujjwala was a Tom Ford girl and was booked for Gucci and Ysl again and again, and then D&G and Victoria Secret and then again for viktor and rolf . I mean she was standing among the greatest supermodels of the world, She was standing alongside Gisele, Carmen, naomi, fernanda, raquel, And remember ujjwala at the Roberto Cavalli show in 2005 .

Has she ever appeared in a Gucci or YSL ad campaign during Tom Ford’s tenure there? I can only vaguely remember Ai Tominaga being the only other Asian high fashion model in a major YSL and i believe Gucci perfume ad campaign during the early 2000s (Maybe Ling Tan did an ad campaign or so also for one of the houses under Tom Ford at that time but my memory doesnt seem to be too strong anymore). Hoping to see Ujjwala, Lakshmi, Pooja and some other Indian modela starring together in a major high fashion ad campaign someday, who knows right eventhough this is wishful thinking.

Ohh GODDD, HOW I agree with this comment! That is sooo true. As an Indian myself, I do not think these models represent the diversity of India very well. I understand that this is successfully breaking Indian “beauty standards” but WHERE are those people with big eyes, sharp features, yellowish skin, small eyes (the Northeast folks), thin lips, etc… It’s like most of these people are in a “Look like Kim Kardashian contest.” In all honesty, if all these people were in the same room (with Kim K in it), I wouldn’t be able to tell them apart. Although successfully violating Indian standards, they seem like stereotypical European models. There simply should be no standards!
