I have a 1 yr. Old GSD and we just came home with a 14 week old GS puppy. When introducing we placed the puppy in a crate and let our 1 yr. Old GS sniff him while in crate then we took puppy our and put him on my lap. The older dog just sniffed the puppy for a while when the puppy became curious he wanted out if my arms and on the floor checking out his new environment and my 1 yr. Old just followed behind. They are now besties

People don't understand how innate hierarchy is in animals as well as among humans and that it's okay to be submissive because if everybody was dominant we would be fighting constantly. We tend to think of submissive as a negative word but it isn't as long as you follow a competent leader while retaining your ability to think independently

Great comment.
@jpdogtraining2 жыл бұрын
You’re correct. Many would like to believe this hierarchy does not exist in the dog world. Release 4-5 dogs (who’ve never met) into a dog park and you will watch them jockey for position every time. This is why I hate dog parks. It’s a recipe for disaster because their is no clear leader. . . Secondly, some watch this video and it “bothers” them because it seems risky, they attach human emotions to what they think the dogs are feeling, or fear the dogs could have gotten hurt. What they didn’t see is the countless hours of training and trust I have in my pack and they have in me. I know them and they have been highly trained. Without a doubt, they know I’m am their leader and these dogs will default to me. . . So, if I choose to believe there is no hierarchy, then there is no leader. Where there is a lack of leadership - chaos is inevitable. . . If people watch this video simply for what it is (a raw example of how dogs interact when they first meet) then maybe they can appreciate the way a dog thinks. Because if you can’t do that you shouldn’t ever train a dog.

Depending upon the dominance and "horsepower" level of the pack lead dog, I make my presence known in the ritual - they all know the boss is observing and to keep things within the limits of my approval. That respect is worth a pound of cure. :)

I honestly think Scout is respectful and not afraid of any of the other dogs in that yard. If it came down to a respect and in Scouts space he would really hurt one of them dogs.. He is very well behaved and also very patient his dog instinct will kick in at some point and he will have to show the others who is the alpha and that him the visitor. He is not showing any signs of fear his tongue is out the entire time these other dogs are communicating with him.. This dog is amazing but he will only put up with these other dogs for so long before he snaps. In my opinion Samson is showing more dominance than is needed for a situation like this he is making the other dogs more tense and Scout is trying to be calm and respectful. I would work with Samson right away as you are recording the video and correct him for being to aggressive and making the other dogs tense and aggressive. You are supposed to be the leader not Samson he is controlling you and the rest of the dogs and it is only going to get him hurt or someone else. I don’t believe that is the proper way of introducing a new dog into a pack. I just watched the beginning of a why dogs fight and the owner didn’t make any effort to correct the situation.

It's hard to assess your situation without knowing your dog. Yet, the key is to create a culture where you are the leader and your dogs are the followers. They need to take their cues from you. In my experience, it is typically easier to bring a puppy into your home than an adult dog.

What’s your stance on training your dog to be non-vocal? I don’t want my shepherd to be barking his head off at everything, every day. I want to cultivate a calm and quiet demeanour.
@cherryy46393 жыл бұрын
You basically train him not too but it comes from your confidence if your not confident in the situation the dog is going to feel like they have to bark at everything Bc they feel that you are incapable of protecting them. When they bark at things they don’t need to you give them a correction and tell them to calm
@RJ-vy9ch3 жыл бұрын
@@cherryy4639 Thanks. If he's excited to see his dog friends or the sight of a member of the family having not seen them for a while he may bark out of excitement, which I don't correct. I try to be calm and confident in all situations so he doesn't bark at anything. Mission accomplished.

Do you have a video on dealing with introducing new puppy when one existing dog is not happy and showing aggression? We are so scared our male cocker is going to physically attack the puppy female, we have intervened each time he has lunhed, snarled or got aggressive vocally.

We do not have a video of that dynamic. However, we encourage you to introduce them in short organic spurts - not a face to face forced introduction. They need to know you’re the leader.

Appreciated your video/instructions! BUT, a question important to me; -- I'm going to be introducing a new Doberman, a visitor for 2 weeks to our house) -- we have another Doberman and a very small dog: So, in your clip, How could you be sure that the dogs would not fight? in the very beginning, before the submissive posture of the new dog, they could easily get into a fight, no? No leashes, fences,etc... - thanks for any feedback!
@jpdogtraining3 жыл бұрын
The key is that I completely know and trust my dogs to submit to me and obey me in every circumstance. Without this high level of obedience, I would never try this without every dog on a leash.

How long does this little game go on? And how do you handle introducing a dog like a mini bernedoodle into a home with a GSD? The issue I am having is I am afraid that the mini bernedoodle can’t defend himself like scout could if he needed to
@jpdogtraining4 жыл бұрын
If you are the one overseeing the introduction, things will be under control. In this video, 3 of these dogs are my dogs - so I know and trust them. I know how far they will or won't go. In other cases that are not my own dogs, I would have leashed up the dog(s) who were being introduced. This gives you control and an easier way to guide the process. All that to say, leash up your dogs so their interactions are under your supervision and control until they learn the rules.

Watch again and you will see my dogs were never once out of my control and I within a few feet of them at all times. I would have been even more hands on if my dogs or Scout were putting any dog in danger. You can see there were no bites and I stepped in a couple of times to remind them I’m their ultimate leader regardless of what their working out amongst themselves. Which by the way, they would do with or without me - make much more sense to be managing the ritual.

Thank you for your comment. Keep in mind that this video is raw and unedited -- unlike a Cesar Milan TV show. Not all dog training is like Hollywood. @thelunatruth38603 жыл бұрын
Yea i agree it’s edited for sure but the other thing is Cesar Millán someone I follow and have all his books and have done it his way which has worked very good for my dogs, Cesar way is to train the humans which then helps the dogs feel the calm assertive energy from the human which then the dog feels the human is the pack leader. Which JP all those dogs know he is the pack leader. Anyhow, great raw video. Liked it.

You are the alpha not the dog. Should not allow barking or growling at each other.
@jpdogtraining3 жыл бұрын
The purpose of the video is to show how dogs can work things out within the boundaries you allow. No one can be with their dogs 24/7 so it’s valuable to see what takes place in their mind/actions. This video is not meant to be a tutorial as much as to help viewers understand the bigger picture of how dogs think.

How’d they “flatten him”? No one got knocked down, bit, mounted, or hurt. These were dogs what dog do (their nature tells them to do) -- size each other up so they can establish an understanding of the hierarchy.
