Introducing Our Newest Setup - iKamper Skycamp Mini | Conquest Overland

Camping in the rain, a true Pacific Northwest experience… What better way to try out the latest setup of the iKamper Skycamp Mini than taking it out for on a weekend adventure filled with rain and the solitude of a peaceful campsite.
As many of you know, the GFC was briefly with us for a handful of trips. While the camper provided many benefits specifically to the truck platform, it’s already apparent the Skycamp Mini is better suited for our lifestyle and preferred year round comforts.
For those who’ve been apart of our travels over the past several years know that our setup has progressively evolved and for the better. Not only will this new tent serve as our centerpiece for all upcoming adventures but also fully encompasses my role working alongside the iKamper team and living the mission statement, “Love People, Love Nature”.

@@joshmcdermott8262 : In my own opinion, the GFC is not worth the price. To me the GFC just felt kinda cheap and flimsy and the tent quality was not what I expected it to be considering they hype it up. Once little things started to fall apart (mind you I only used it a few times) that’s when I decided it’s got to go. Now, that was my experience and it was in the 900s so it was with the new updated dhinges and everything. Others I know have had very similar issues and some haven’t. Overall I just didn’t like it and was not worth the $8000. Who knows. Maybe after all this time they have made noticeable improvements.

I was really hoping to hear your reasoning in the video for the change, but glad you said why in the description. I think your rig looks so much better in this configuration. That's because IMHO there are few campers or canopies that look good on a truck and unless you can afford to have a GFC color matched to your rig I never thought they looked good. I was wondering though, what you have decided to do for storage now that you have an open rack system in place. I'm asking because I am considering getting a rack along with a decked system, but how do you keep gear safe and scure in the bed that is on top of the decked system so gear is not getting stolen and so you're not having to load and uload after each trip? I would say a tonneau cover, but there are very few tonneau covers that work with these kind of rack systems. Would love to hear yours and anyone elses thoughts.

Storage is certainly a new challenge but not one that's making things terribly difficult. I still kept the Decked Drawers for everything in recovery & galley gear. Item that don't fit in the drawers or that I simply do not want in the cab I'm utilizing weatherproof lockable gear cases. Still trying to figure out which brand/style is best for me. With making the investment in good cases you don't have to worry about weather elements and even running a cable lock could provide peace of mind. I do however will still need to unload after each trip. Not a big deal as the rig is still my daily driver and it's nice to mitigate the extra weight when not needed! 😉 👍

I love both the GFC and IKamper Skycamp mini. I see the pros to both products, things may vary and have to take into considerations. Like my friends who have both, one on each separate rig. My friend Jamie works in a building where the vertical limit entering the carport and with is 3 inch lift and on 33’ he has about 3 inches of room before it would hit the roof of the Skycamp and goes the same for his apartment garage. When he had the GFC was forced to park in the open space 4 blocks away. My friend Kell, now has Jamie’s GFC on her Tacoma and lives and works in Montana where she has no issues with vertical limitations in carports. Loves the GFC and because she camps alone loves the ability to secure herself in the GFC at night when she sleeps. Over both amazing rig. @Conquest Overland. Keep inspiring and living the dream. Hope to run into you on the trail one of these days.

Thank you very much! The light bar is the Baja Design S8 30" in amber. It's a bit overkill for all my needs but fills the bumper nicely and throws light a football field down the trail... haha.

Curious to see how this setup evolves. I know you have the decked drawers to secure your gear but did you consider a DiamondBack cover with the Front Runner rack system? This would allow you to secure larger items & keep them out of the weather. Love your channel... honestly it's the best.

Thank you very much! Something like the DiamondBack setup was definitely a consideration but I really enjoy having a drawer system in the bed. By having both there would have been great limitation to store anything between the top of the drawer and underside of the DiamondBack. The low profile bed rack was a great alternative for now. I'm looking into more robust weatherproof gear cases to help with protecting item from the elements but so far no real issues, even in the downpour rain!

For certain aspects such as a standing living space and secure & enclosed gear storage, I do miss having the GFC platform. Though I really am enjoying the comforts of the iKamper tent for all season use along with saving weight and less wind drag by having the tent largely below the cab line. Not to mention the much easier use of external storage for quickly grabbing traction boards or rotopacks. Thank you for the support!

@@carylindley7053 no worries! I never had a real issue with water leaks simply from driving in the rain or at camp, the only time was when washing the truck and deliberately power washing where the hinges and corners were.

have been subbed watching you now for maybe 4 months and man I wish I would have kept my 4runner. I have a lifted STi but worry about the rougher roads than access roads. Helps you live in the same state and probably with an hour of me. I do hear the downfall of the ikamper is the lack of windows and you have to angel it toward the view. (If this is the clamshell that opens to the side vs toward the front.

I’m going to say from your new set up from the go fast camper I really think the the go fast camper and the awning that you had was a better set up and more out of the weather but you are looking to do more off roading on ruff road then the new set would work better and maybe better gas mileage to but the most in port thing is get out and have fun out in the woods Brian

Sure just turn the tent around to open from the other side but keep in mind that the iKamper is sloped “front to back” which means when you turn it around the “thick” end will be facing the front so it may not look as pleasing to the eye.

I was thinking before you got the GFC it wasn’t going to be what you thought it would. I didn’t want to be the negative comment about getting it. I love the IKamper! They are one of the coolest RTT in the market plus being local to the retail store helps.(In Kent) I think you will be very happy with the new set up. You really seemed to like your Mom’s IKamper so I was kinda wondering if you were going to switch. The Anex is a great idea too. I’m sure that is on your list of next’s. I have the GFC on a Chevy Colorado ZR2 and love it because I can still slide the truck into my garage, it is self contained to keep all my gear dry, secure, and mostly dust free. I live in the Pacific Northwest and keeping gear dry is always a concern, which is one reason why I love being able to park it in my garage - packed and ready to go, out of sight and out of the elements. I am not an "off roader" but use it to get to trailheads for trail running and other outdoor adventures so it seems to be the perfect setup for my needs. I drag my wife along on these adventures and it works great, I would say for a solo person the GFC setup is like a palace for space & comfort. I am looking forward to see how his content will differ or stay the same with the iKamper. At the end of the day it is just a place to sleep and stay dry. Don't knock a guy for trying to improve his financial situation, but for the viewers just remember that it is a business now to sale you a product. Good luck on the new venture.

Some things come to mind. I wonder how easy it is to get up into the bed area in the GFC when you climb inside the truck bed? It’s similar to an Ursa Minor and watching Chris Shontz do it, you have to hoist yourself in which might be a bit difficult. I did think the deck system could make things awkward climbing up and in so wondered about the ergonomics of that. If this was a sponsorship, good on you for getting to that point where you can be in this position but then you should declare it and not make up a “rational”. Just acknowledge it and move on. I have an iKamper and they’re great, especially once you upgrade the mattress but in relation to the GFC setup, not sure this is really an “upgrade”. Video quality was great as usual but this silent video felt a lot like a product promo.

I got the GFC with the Decked. The Decked system is nice because it is one smooth flat surface and elevates you up closer the GFC so it actually enhances your ability to access the tent/sleeping area via the truck bed. The drawback to that access point is if you are using a double sleeping pad in the tent you have to do some crazy yoga moves to get around the pad, which is okay if solo. If you have 2 people in the tent sleeping, I highly recommend getting a ladder and adding the side door to the tent when ordering the GFC.
