Oh, yesssss! "BEST FOR THE WEST" Zone 9-11!!!! At last, focus on us out here in the West! So many times i fall in love with a plant only to discover it's not in my zone (10). This has been a long time coming and Thank You, Janey, for answering the call! Now we just need the garden centers to carry them! Love how you've got your 3 divisions for Zone 9-11. And, Proven Winners you're the bomb so "head on west" and let's see a variety of plants for our zone at the garden centers! Then perhaps there'll be a Zone 10 garden vlogger we can watch on KZbin along with Janey and Laura's. Yeah!

Janey thank you so much for following through and developing The Best for the West lists for us. Great idea. I live in zone 9B and totally love all geraniums. They are so hardy, propagate very easily, can take full sun and shade, rabbits don't eat them, they tolerate poor soil, and tolerate high salt and boron in our water. The ivy geraniums besides being gorgeous in hanging baskets also make a beautiful ground cover. They are available in many beautiful colors. They are a perennial for me in Tracy. Thank you so much.

Love this idea, Janey! I’m wondering if the reason Proven Winners doesn’t address our climate on their website is because the supply of their plants to our area is almost nil in my opinion. I find it very hard to find Proven Winners plants at any of the nurseries here in the S.F. Bay Area. I also wish they could be persuaded to find more commercial nurseries in the west willing to grow their plants. (At least, I think that’s what I’ve read in the past about why there’s a scarcity of their brand of plants here.) Thanks for bringing this issue to light and for coming up with the Best of the West planting guide!

Janey, I love your channel! So happy to see a gardening program that focuses on our western location. I think Proven Winners plants are the best, but getting your hands on them is an issue here in So Cal, zone 10a. Please let Proven Winners know we need more growers in this area for their wonderful plants!

Hi Janey- I'm a native Californian who is now living in Boise, ID, Zone 6b. Gardening here is WAY different than gardening in San Francisco, Novato, Sacramento, Antelope, Orangevale...all the places I've called home for most of my life. Allot of the plants are same here in ID, but so many are different and treated differently here in ID and some I've never heard of and have never experienced. You know what blew me away when i came to ID? In the spring Costco sells big beautiful hanging baskets of geraniums...at the end of fall when temps get down, people just throw them out because they freeze, they are treated as annuals here. It's crazy to me. It has been a16-year- learning curve. I'm excited to learn about your "Best in the West" series to see what I can apply to my northwest planting experience. I love your new property and every morning I look forward to your videos to see what adventure you're going to take us on next!

And a lot of the plants that you have mentioned I can grow here they're just more on a annual basis depending on the plant. Hi Janey, I live in Southern California zone 10b, and I really want to thank you for introducing me to one of my favorite plants in my garden “Mystic Spires Blue” salvia ! The color is beautiful and attracts pollinators. I am a plantaholic and have a variety of salvias 😂, but that one is my favorite. One shrub that is evergreen here and performs really well for me on my clay soil is “Euryops” . I really recommend it, is for USDA zones 8-11t,.I know you tried the “Proven Winners” at your last house garden and like it but didn’t love to deadhead it. I would say you need to try it again, it is just like butterfly bushes, they need to be deadhead too to look it’s best Euryops flowers are very pretty and attracts bees and butterflies, they are heat tolerant and drought tolerant once stabilized, it is in fact my favorite performer in my garden! Have a great day :)

In Las Vegas my Superbells, Coleus, Queen Tut, Plum Dandy, Supertunia are doing AMAZING especially in the 4 beautiful Aqua Pots that I purchased last spring. My 2 Pugsters Butterfly bushes really struggled after being planted in April, when the 115 degree weather hit, they fried and lost all of their leaves but are full of new leaves now. I am hoping that next spring they will be established and tolerate next summer better. I also planted a Fireball burning bush at the same time, it too struggled with the 115 heat but just sprouted new foliage in the last couple of weeks. I have to tell you that I am so excited for the new 20 year old Crape Myrtle tree that is being planted in our backyard in a couple of weeks. Your beautiful garden under the Crape Myrtle was my inspiration. Thank you for all you do to inspire we gardeners in the west

I'm an Oregon dry, zone 5. We get feet of snow in the Winter and no rain in the Summer. So a lot of the mediterranean plants that you can grow won't work. But I want to highlight using junipers for evergreen interest. Once they get established, they don't need anything. There are varieties that you can still topiarize or cut into boxes. I like to plant junipers, russian sage, etc. And that leaves me with more water for limelights😂.

Proven Winners shrubs and perennials do not do well here in the coastal Pacific Northwest in my experience. When I want to know what will grow well here, I ask at my local independent garden centers. Also, if you can find a large Facebook group dedicated to your specific gardening area, you can learn a lot from other gardeners in your area. I watch KZbinrs for ideas, but the reality is their gardening climate is usually too different from mine.

Even Cats Pajama has struggled this year. Good grief. I have tried many Proven Winners plants only to have them die. We are on water restrictions, so there is no watering everyday. The Best of the West set of lists is a good idea. I live on the coast of southeastern NC, zone 8a. Most plant tags have information about cold hardiness, but not so much about heat tolerance, which those of us zone 8 and above really need. I have learned a lot about what plants can tolerate, mostly from difficult experiences. I have certainly learned that my zone 8a is NOT the same Florida zone 8a or Texas zone 8a, or the Oregon coast zone 8a.The sun intensity is such a factor in the higher zones. I have noticed more KZbin gardeners are intentionally talking about light conditions in different areas of the country. It will be interesting to see how you progress.

Jamey, thank you so much for doing all this research! I live in zone 9b as well, not too far from you in Rocklin, CA, and it has been a struggle to get plants to survive. I don't always have a lot of time to compile plant lists, so this is so helpful and much appreciated! Blessings to you and your family.
