Just got one 2 weeks ago, and so far I love it. I use it with "Celtic Sounds" on my iPhone. There are some issues trying to change key with the configuration tool, but the app handles it quite well. There are other apps that handle the output of the configuration tool better but "Celtic Sounds" has the most life like whistle. It also does a great Uilleann Pipes. I am able to practice as much as I want without disturbing the rest of the family. If I need more volume if I'm playing with others, a small Bluetooth speaker gives me all that I need.

Thanks for the video. WARBL seems to be so much more than a tin whistle. It's the most configurable open-source software/hardware USB MIDI wind instrument out there. So you can play any synthesizer you want. It's even much more customizable than big brand products (Akai EWI Solo and Roland Aerophone Go) which cost much more. However, brand products have more keys and built-in sounds (which usually are not as good as standalone hardware / software synths anyway).

Great work. I’ve been playing around with a friend’s WARBL and totally love it. Just ordered one from Andrew. In the meantime, I’ll be making some videos with the Warbl. I’ve always wanted to play the oboe and the viola and now I can! Have been exploring iOS apps. So far, I find ThumbJam, iSymphonic, and Oriental Strings quite nice. Still looking out for other apps for iOS. ThumbJam allows you to loop and record tracks you can play the Warbl with.
@isabelleraby47794 жыл бұрын
I would agree with Jim Leeper, it's much easier to use the Warbl on an iPhone (an old one with a phone jack will do the trick) and the Celtic Sounds app has a fairly realistic whistle sound. I have also used it on a OnePlus 5 Android phone with FluidSynth and it did not sound as good but it worked absolutely fine. Andrew Mowry is extremely helpful and reactive if you have any technical issues with the device, either on the Warbl forum or his Facebook page. All the blu-tack on the blade and so-called "quiet whistles" just do not compare with the experience of practicing on the Warbl. Yes, it's expensive but it's saved my marriage, my dogs' ears and my son's exams results - well worth the investment 😁

Benny .kolbe I played Gabriel’s oboe at a public performance using my regular tinwhistle but the whistle failed at the highest note. I just tried playing Gabriel’s oboe with the Warbl with the Reeds sound on iSymphonic app. It was just a dream. No issue hitting the high note. It was the best thing that has happened in the windcontroller front. One thing though. Apple devices use the lightning port. You need to connect the Warbl to your iOS device via the Apple connector kit. Unfortunately, you can’t connect your headphones along with the Warbl - the set up just doesn’t allow you to do that. Tom S I'm sure one of the apps we have hurdy gurdy sound, but that's nothing to do with the WARBL, as it doesn't make any sound on its own, that's purely the app or software you choose. As for playing it like a hurdy gurdy i'm not sure... You could attach the bagpipe bellows as the 'drone' maker and cover holes like you're playing strings I guess...but you'd have to find the notes in a different way, as it's not designed to play like a string instrument...
@JonathanDevine5 жыл бұрын
MIDI is just commands for notes and timing. The software determines the instrument. You could have 20, you could have 200. Just depends on the software. I'm no expert but I highly suspect some software packages would let you plug in additional instruments from third parties.

I am really intrigued by the range of comments about the Warbl's use and price. I guess for those who love their traditional instruments, it would seem extremely expensive. For those who are constantly exploring how to expand their capabilities with electronic sounds, the WARBL is a simple, small, and extremely helpful piece of professional equipment what you can use professionally. Instead of thinking of it as an expensive electronic version of the $10 tinwhistle for quiet practice, think of it as a midi windcontroller which allows you to play new exotic sounds, replace an entire brass section, or allow one who only plays the tinwhistle to play the instrument you never got to learn when you were a kid! For musicians making a living, it cuts down their costs substantially, and it opens up amazing new windows. I would be extremely unfair to complain about how expensive it is for the purpose of playing silently to yourself. That wouldn't be the only use. In fact, those of you who use the Warbl with the ipad/iphone know that you cannot connect your headphones to your new iphone/ipad once the Apple Camera Kit is attached. You cannot play it silently to yourself with the iphone/iPad. You can only do it with the old iphones/Pads which still have the 3.5mm jack or if you are connected to your computers using a DAW like GarageBand, etc. Berklee recently recoginised Electronic Digital Instruments (EDIs) as a valid instruments kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHuymYqBgcRpfLc - so do recognize that the Warbl is actually an addition to the cutting edge developments in the music scene. Now the instrument you need to perform on the big stage can be fit into your pocket. To me, that is nothing short of amazing - and all for $250! That's why I'm grateful @CutiePie featured this for us. It just happens that I have my friend's Warbl in my possession and am exploring its use for myself with its maker Andrew so I'm actually quite excited about the project. Credits too to @Michael Eskin for your contribution to the Warbl's development.

I've watched dozens of videos about the Warbl, but not one tells me how to put the sound through an actual PA system. I assume (?) that I need another lead that goes from the i|Pad or phone into the PA system, but many phones have just one USB input (used for the Warbl) and a headphone jack. So how can I use the Warbl for a live show through a PA system? I'm sorry if this is an ignorant question - there's probably a simple solution!
@CutiepieTinWhistle2 жыл бұрын
The warbl plugs into the USB port of a tablet or phone (the same port it charges through) and the sound comes out through the audio jack (where you'd usually plug in headphones). If you can plug the PA system, or a speaker into the audio jack, you should be good to go. You may also be able to play sound out through bluetooth - like you do through a bluetooth speaker :)

@@CutiepieTinWhistle Thank you very much for your swift reply. Using bluetooth may not be a good idea because of latency (delay). I'll try through the audio jack, but this, I assume, depends on the quality of the phone - i.e. it being a good stereo jack. Again, thanks.

I dont think the price is that bad. I bought a 300 dollar ocarina last month, no regrets! 😂 The best part is that I havent been able to even use its full range yet. Its four octaves

Wow! 4 octaves is very impressive!

That's an interesting device. Other than being able to practice in silence, it wouldn't be something I'd use much as the MIDI "sound" has never appealed to me. I would rather buy a couple of Killarney (or other quality brand) whistles for my playing pleasure. Love your channel.

Thank you :) it's purely for practice I think, perhaps travel. Having watched a few of the WARBL videos on the website you can set it up to NAF fingering too - very cool for playing multiple instrument styles on one device! :)

Yep! I helped develop the NAF fingering. It's not just for practice. This is a new instrument in its own right that also happens to be able to emulate playing of whistles, pipes, NAF, and more.

@@jimhanksmusic Aho Jim, Does the N.A.F. setting allow for playing in different keys and octaves, say for example high, mid, and bass G or F# or A?

Yes. I don't want to hijack this post so we should probably continue over here if you're interested: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXm4gJ6VepqhfZo

Would we call bagpipes a musical instrument? 🥴🇬🇧♥️
@thomasd92375 ай бұрын
So it's not actually a real instrument. Seems like they could do it better by making a piezo style pick-up that you could mount as needed & switch between different keyed whistles as needed
@CutiepieTinWhistle5 ай бұрын
Well you can play music with it and change the key, so it's definitely a real instrument 😊

Would have been nice to hear it play an actual tin whistle sound, but anyway...
