Transcript:
Hi, I’m Jenee Petri- Swanson (shows name sign - 1 twists on cheek where the dimple is.) I’m a hearing interpreter. Leah and I set up the ASL Mommune together. You will continue to see Leah moving forward as she is the host of the show and will be on camera with Deaf guests. Which is perfect! As for me, you will not see me moving forward because I’ll be doing my work in the background, behind the scenes. This is really the perfect role for me as a hearing person. I do value and want to support the Deaf community - their aspirations and desires, I want to support that. I can do so by providing labor behind the scenes while allowing them (Deaf host and guest) be centered, out front, and in the spotlight.
In addition to caring about the Deaf community, I also value motherhood. I am a mother myself. I have a one year old son - - no, correction, I have 1 son who is 5 years old, soon to be 6. I also have experienced 3 miscarriages myself. They were horrible, traumatic experiences for me. Having been through that, I began feverishly preaching to other women about the warning signs of things that could happen, encouraging them to speak to their doctor about certain things because prior to my miscarriages, I had no idea what could happen and all that went wrong.
Now, because of that, I really value and place high importance on sharing stories with each other to help life each other up, and to become aware through shared wisdom.
The ASL Mommune is the perfect place for all of my passions to be invested in one place supporting both Deaf community and mothers at once. And ongoing, it's just perfect. Thank you for letting me bear witness to your beautiful language and stories. I look forward to my continued support! ILY!
