A Deaf producer introducing his own form of sign language in a movie as big as Avatar is bigger than most people understand. This guy should be getting the same credit as Paul Frommer for his work
@Char10tti3 Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately I don't think it featured enough in the film to stand out to most, we got more scenes of Spider teaching his dad Na'vi and it seemed the Sulis picked it up without being taught. Also i only found out the Na'vi creators name when this film cane out too, but yes definitely needs more credit. I am more aware of the creator of the Game of Thrones conlangs but also social media and sharing has taken off a lot more as well so less content is seen and shared by the algorithm

They use Sign Language a lot in the forest too. Maybe because that's silent and it's easier to hunt in that way. I love it how differences there are from the Earth people. I think there are not much deaf Na'vi in the population because they are people who the evolution significantly affect. I mean the unviable people die, if you can't hear the danger coming it will kill you. In my opinion that's why all living Na'vi are in good condition, they are healthy, muscular, strong and beautiful.
@allisonguthrie8257 Жыл бұрын
Real indigenous cultures did this too! Nations across the North American Plains used Plains Indigenous Sign Language, not only to accommodate deaf people, but also to communicate between tribes who couldn’t speak one another’s languages. It was a language of diplomacy and coming together between groups across a huge geographical area. And it’s still being taught and learned today!
@noah-yp1jm Жыл бұрын
@@almaszirom the omatikaya use their sign language for enphasis and a few fixed expressions. it's definitely more complex and specialized than our everyday gestures, but still i'd say it's closer to that than to an actual sign language. the metkayina tho (the water guys), they do have a sign language, but it probably arised from te need to speak to each other underwater

I wonder if there would ever be humans who have caused Na'vi hearing loss because of weapons on their sensitive hearing, this would make the sign language also spread beyond the reef. I don't think the forest Na'vi would have as much use for it as they can't always see each other and may not have the space to sign surrounded by vegetation without drawing attention edit: for example you hear Neytiri has bird-like calls to alert her kids from a distance
