In this lecture, we'll be diving into Deleuze and Guattari's arguably greatest work, A Thousand Plateaus, specifically going through the introductory chapter on the rhizome. I'll discuss and explain D&G's ontology through the notion of the rhizome and assemblage, as well as show their emphasis on action, experimentation, becoming, and difference. I'll explain terms such as deterritorialization, reterritorialization, assemblage, rhizome, line of flight, plane of consistency, and more.
The key guide to the lecture is D&G's 6 principles of the rhizome, which are as follows,
1) Connection - any point can be connected to any other; transmutability.
2) Heterogeneity - not reducible, either to the One or multiplicity.
3) Multiplicity - only lines of magnitude and variability.
4) Asignifying rupture - lines of segmentarity tend to rupture along lines of flight (principle of deterritorialization).
5) Cartography - a productive map/landscape/plane of desire.
6) Decalcomania - non-hierarchical, non-significatory system without an axis of rotation.

Very nice work . Many thanks. But now just show me a single quote where Deleuze-Guattari made use of the concept of “binary” as you use it here. Binary is not the most intelligent way to substitute the concept of dichotomy. The only binary systems existe in computer language. The rest of the biological life in earth is binary by principle, you included. Again:: Binarism is stupid way to describe dichotomies. I am not saying of course that you are stupid. Congratulations for your videos I am a fan!

@@CarlosSandovalBerlin Binary and dichotomy are synonyms. Deleuze and Guattari do believe that binaries are instituted, however, rather than exhaustive and discrete points. For them, everything is a spectrum of change and intensities, so these binaries are the results of reductive practices such as scientific or legal discourses or, indeed, computer languages.

@@gavinyoung-philosophyOk, your affirmation that “binarism” and “dichotomism” are synonymous is just that, your affirmation. But just show me a quote where Deleuze-Guattari use both terms in an equivalent form. I will be very surprised if you find it. But I will shut up and be your fanatic fan if you show me one case!

fantastic video. developing a piece about difference and repetition and applying it to pop-culture (critique of spongebob) and research led me to anti-oedipus and now here.

KZbin recommended me this. I think KZbin made a mistake because I have not understood anything in the first 10 minutes. It takes a special kind of person to have the willpower to study such abstract concepts.

i came into critical theory with a background in science so guatrri's use of scientific language has a drastically different impact on my understanding of his ideas about subjectivity. i strongly suggest you do some research on biology: from a scientific perspective its immediately clear you rely on philosophical applications which means you dont rely on the actual theory he does.

I do what I can. You’re right: I’m no botanist or biologist. My hope is that the concept still carries over.

@gavinyoung-philosophy no, they do. Your lack of familiarity is clear (to some) but rest assured: the applicable biological theory is entirely accessible (theoretically and intellectually). I mean there's no need for faith or a phd, a few months of science education videos should fill your game out.

@gavinyoung-philosophy I'll give an example: as soon as I encountered molar/molecular, having struggled through some chemistry in college this idea of concentration vs components as a concatenation came naturally. Here one can introduce a topological as well as guatarris preference for a cartographic approach. One maps a molecule and concentration is nothing but intensity.
