In this video, I talk about the #basics of #ACES. The Academy Color Encoding System. What it is, what it's for and why more and more high-end production houses are using it in their pipelines. It seriously improves your #Workflow. You will learn how to work in ACES in Blackmagic Fusion, Davinci Resolve and After Effects.
You can expect a more detailed video in the future. It's worth talking about differences between ACEScc, ACESct, ACEScg etc. and their behaviors.

It's worth mentioning for anyone struggling to export your comp from after effects, you need to turn off color management in your output settings as well. Otherwise, the colors will shift.

Hey guys, hope you're intrigued enough to start exploring this topic and make your projects even greater. For the scientific gurus trolling in the comments: Please, don't pick up on words, I recorded the video at night and called Linear gamma "Color space" by accident. The processes shown in the video are correct, but I think this topic would worth another more detailed and accurate video later, where we would discuss the differences between ACEScc, ACESct, ACEScg etc. and their behaviors with examples and use cases throughout the pipeline. Until then, have fun guys. xo

EXCELLENT intro to ACES. I tested this technique on a few clips that I felt were lacking proper color adjustment from CLOG3. The footage was much much closer to being usable right away. Using ACES would have been a great starting point to color correct and eventually grade. This is excellent information. Thank you!

Hi andrey, thank you for the video ! I have been using ACES (not a lot but regularly) and I'm glad to see I did it properly. If I may, I think there is another way to make it work in AE : configure your project as you said (32bpcc, linear) but without assigning a color workspace. Then when you import your footage, change the color interpretation to Keep RGB values. This bypass AE color management. Now you can use OCIO plugin on each clip in your comp to convert it to ACES and an adjustment layer with OCIO to convert it back to the output you want. That's what I've been doing and it seems to work fine but I'll give a try to your method to see if there's any difference. Thank again ! (I really have to give ACES a try in Resolve to color grade)

Hey Andrey, big fan here, thanks for bringing ACES to the people. Since there's a lot of confusion out there already, I would have hoped you distinguish between the terms Color Space, Gamut, and LOG profile (or Transform function, rather), as it is crucial to the concept and overall understanding (you are dealing with transform functions in this video primarily). Hence, I'd like to ask you, what about the Offset-Slider behaviour in Resolve. You note that it now "behaves as linear light", which is wrong as I see it. Linear means: doubling the light intensity doubles the recorded values, which is absolutely not what happens in the waveform. I believe this example contributes more to confusion than it helps to clarify.
@thenout
@thenout 5 жыл бұрын
Just to elaborate a bit: the camera does record everything linear, but due to limitations in file size the values will be transformed using a camera specific function, the Optical Image Transform Function (if I remember correctly). This is nothing else than a "LOG-curve". Technically, if you record in REC709, this is also a LOG curve, which gets automatically inverted by the video player to give out a linear result. Here it gets really tricky dealing with the term linear light... For example, in Nuke, you assign a profile when you import the footage item, let's say Slog2. Nuke inverts this transform function to achieve linear light space, which is how light behaves in real world. The image only looks "OK" though when you apply a viewer LUT to simulate, let's say, Rec709 output. When you do render out, you apply a profile (which has nothing to do with ACES profiles...) to the clip. So a Rec709 function is applied, which in return gets inverted by the playing device, resulting also in a "linear" image. Did I sum that up correctly?
@AndreyLebrov
@AndreyLebrov 5 жыл бұрын
Yeap, you’re correct. My intention was to introduce ACES. If I would go deep into specifics and how exactly all encoding happens this video would be several hours long. Hence why I didn’t talk about the differences between aces versions. I know what you mean, but that kind of content would be aimed to an advanced audience. I’m trying to simplify a lot of things so that people would start to look into it. As for my examples, I did say it’s not true, it’s just my analogy to describe the difference in how curves are shaped. It’s worth mentioning this video is a follow up to linear workflow video where I mentioned automatic conversions to curves and showed other stuff you mentioned. Thank you for the comment ❤️ I appreciate your contribution and opinion.

Thanks a million times, Andrey! I stumbled accidentally to this video, not even ever heard of ASEC, and man, what a game changer this will be for me! Thank you very much for sharing this, it is really priceless! I actually need to add this as well, hopefully it will help someone shooting weddings/events, like me, on DSLR (H264, 8 bit), if they ever have a doubt to switching to ASEC.... Just by switching in DVResolve to ASECcc Color Science, it's like the plain DSLR footage "by magic" got much more dynamic range, the whole DVR panel seems much more responsive, and the stuff I can bring back from the overexposed highlights is in par with RAW (well almost, but pretty mind blowing). For people that just can't get themselves to follow this man's step by step, you really won't regret iif you do it, and it will seem all of a sudden that you have a much better camera than you thought you did, just try it. Cheers Andrey, and thanks for this vid!

Individually assigning Input Color Spaces (per clip) in Resolve is possible when working in DaVinci YRGB Color Managed, too. On another note, you never ever want to see the image as it was "seen by the camera sensor". Judging by the manner in which the waveform values are morphing in your Offset wheel demo, ACES offset mapping is logarithmic (i.e. for equal input, different values on the range axis (Y; vertical) move by unequal increments. Which is the opposite of how a camera sensor "sees" light.
@__haki

@Video Beauty ok, I'll be completely honest with you, I don't know what coefficients there may be to each channel and I don't know what a channel coefficient is, but i'm fine to have an open discussion and learn a thing ot two. My comment was based on observation. Also, "how the camera sensor sees" things is just a nice soundbite which instills the notion that that is a good, desireable and useful thing to have. The fact is, it's not.
@AndreyLebrov
@AndreyLebrov 5 жыл бұрын
Because it can’t be viewed without any sort of processing in the first place. So? Why overcomplicate )) And I never said it’s a desirable or nice thing to have.
@__haki
@__haki 5 жыл бұрын
Hello, Andrey! Ok, yes, it can't be viewed without background processing, true. I should have been a bit clearer that I was pointing at data distribution. to be more precise - to gamma and dynamic range. While a sensor "sees" light linearly, we experience light in a logarithmic fashion. By compressing data using gamma, we can fit more stops of light (aka dynamic range) and we can distribute is so as to approximate the human eye response to light (and that is equal to pleasing images.) Judging by observation, the way the scopes get compressed at the highlights and the shadows areas during Offset, is a clue to me that the intention is to redistribute data without losing dynamic range. I have to disagree that has anything to do with displaying light as seen by the camera sensor in the context of your demo. Just a little further - ASEC can be used for light recorded not only by sensors. Photo-chemical cellulose film medium still exists (barely). Unlike sensors, it records light more or less the way the human eye (and brain) experiences it. (but then of course it will have to be scanned and scanning is recording light via a sensor, so... back to the top) Last thing, I never wrote you had said such a thing, either. I wrote that a soundbite instilled a certain notion. I think that's especially true for the part of the audience who don't know about recording light that much.

ACES (colorspace) is just a universal flexible project that works with all. Simple. It is CMS but instead of working in a project suited to what “most” of your files are, it is generic catch all no matter what you shot. Always ACES. ACES (workflow) is simply a way to take what you did and guarantee you can output it to anything ever made (and formats yet to be invented). Keeps from having to regrade rec709 for the wider color space of HDR or DCI if wanting to show on those screens.

I don't understand why we have so many different colospaces. S Some want log others rec709 we are in srgb renamed srgb8 lately, and sometimes aces but with aces, acescg, etc etc not just one aces to consider.

ACES in a way simplifies all that complication. ACEScg, cc, cct are only working color spaces. ACEScg is similar to ACES; it is linear, linear because CG works best in linear. Color is better in log, so cc and cct are log and quasi-log, respectively. All working spaces use AP1 virtual primaries instead of ACES 2065-1 AP0 primaries. During transfers between software you disable ODT and export in original ACES 2065-1 AP0 primaries. Then you interpret them again in your choice of working space, rinse and repeat. You master it in your choice of ODT(s) and archive by disabling ODT again and your files are in full ACES space ready for re-master any time.

Aces for After Effects is very complicated and very time consuming, not to mention, it slows down preview with all these precomping and stacked effects for the color space conversion. In DaVinci Resolve it is very simple. So we will have to wait till Adobe enables Aces natively like DaVinci Resolve, in an upcoming upgrade...

Probably one of the best video explaining ACES, learnt so much from this video! I do have one question though, for example with the Sony A7s, is XAVCS 4:2:0 capable of this? or do you have to record externally in ProRes 4:2:2 to be able to acccurately transform to ACES from sLog? just trying to understand if I need an external recorder to work in ACES or if in-camera codecs are capable. Cheers
