Drona took Ekalavya's thumb for various reasons not just for Arjuna. After getting insulted by Drupada, Drona received his knowledge on divine weapon from Parasurama. These were basically important military tactics kingdoms used, imagine a infiltrator from Pakistan secretly watching Indian military exercises & learning them. Also Nishadas where Ekalavya was the prince didn’t align with any kingdom. After all these factors and Drona's goal to defeat Drupada made him take that decision. He was loyal to Hastinapur not any person. The problem is ppl don’t read official texts instead learn from wat ppl say or serials which is mostly misleading & distorted.

There are lot more reasons along with what you have mentioned And one of the reasons is the very thing which they show to highlight the skill of Ekalavya So many arrows in a dog’s mouth before it closed its barking jaws. But that also shows how cruel he is - why such over kill over just a dog which just found him as its duty .

Ashwatthama has anger issues. He looses sense when he gets angry. That's why Drona didn't teach Astras to his own son. Arjun was balanced, and follows dharma. Hence Drona liked him. Ashwatthama will become Vyasa ( knowledge giver) in the next manvantar / Yuga. Ekalavya episode is mainly politics. No guru will teach high level Astras, and weapons to everybody.
