Finally a remake of the classical series. I’m really looking forward to all future episodes! Almost got my bachelor’s in biology, so this series will surely come in handy if they go deep enough into detail. Hopes are up! I’m cheering you on Dr. Sammy!

Used the old Crash Course at the time it came out and was a biology student myself. This new version is refreshing, yet I feel it's more oriented to highschoolers. (which is fine, I will this when teaching) Maybe it's because I'm older, or because this first ep is just introducing biology, I'm curious how it will grow further. So thanks for making a wider oriented version of Crash Course!

I first saw Dr. Sammy on Khan Academy's new Biology course, and now on CC Bio 2.0! This intro is so masterfully crafted and delivered - I can see how you learnt from the best of Crash Course innovations across subjects, and combined it with Dr. Sammy's gift for teaching all things life in his inimitable, engaging style! This structure of listing out the characteristics of life without sounding like a monotonous textbook - it makes me think a similar format could be followed for a Crash Course Consciousness/Cognitive Science, if you do eventually make it! I do suggest a 50-episode Consciousness over a shorter CogSci series, since it's important to understand it from as many perspectives as possible - global philosophy, neuroscience, psychology, evolution, linguistics, comparative behavioural biology, etc. Also maybe a super-applied Behavioral Science course too, focusing on how psychology-meets-economics-meets-ethics helps us build a better world.

I very much like the definition of life that Hank onces gave in Dear Hank & John, "something is alive when it needs something, and then does something to get it"

"Are you breathing right now?" Me, chugging caffeinated tea for dear life; "Thankfully, no." And that, too, is biology.

It’s so nice to see an updated series! I watched these when I was taking biology in high school. I’ve taken a lot of college biology and ecology classes now, so it’s cool to watch these from a new perspective. (PS: updated, full length ecology series? would love that)
@ShakalDraconis Жыл бұрын
I personally prefer one of the newer approaches to the whole "are viruses alive" question, viewing the infected cell as the actual organism, and the viral load as the means of reproduction. In this way the virus is more akin to a mote of pollen. Now PRIONS, THOSE are the TRUE edge case!
@gee8419 Жыл бұрын
Personally my college virology teacher told us to save the question of if viruses are alive for our philosophy classes 😂 Virologists routinely refer to a virus as alive if it is capable of replicating.
@ClementinesmWTF Жыл бұрын
Prions and self-replicating RNA/DNA are definitely the edge cases. Viruses I think should be redefined at least as a part of life, if not organisms in their own rights. The definitions of “life” are much like definitions of “species”: sure, they may seem obvious on the surface, and many definitions do align, but there are so many differences and edge cases for each that it may just be better to be as inclusive as possible while noting the intricacies rather than excluding and making half-excuses for why the definition includes this but excludes others.
@venkatchait007 Жыл бұрын
you can also just think of host cells as the viruses environment, as a chemical system the viruses reliance on the existence of host cells is really no different from our reliance on the existence of an atmosphere or plants reliance on sunlight.

I am soo thrilled with this first episode! I think they're following a textbook (from openstax?) or just maybe the very beginning of biology. At school, we jump straight to cells and so on, so this was such a nice kickstart. @MrARock001 Жыл бұрын
One of the most convincing arguments to me for viruses being "alive" is considering the virus particle itself as being only one phase of the organism's life-cycle. Like, the virus particle is effectively a spore from a fungus which can't do anything on its own, but needs to land in a suitable environment (like a living cell) in order to grow to maturity. The implication of that is that the true "adult" form of a virus is just an infected host cell, which has almost no other function than to reproduce.

I’m very glad this video spent so long on the conversation of viruses as an edge case of life and why that is not entirely the case. There is much debate, and I think a lot of biologists are really just stuck to the traditional definitions of “life” when excluding viruses without having a further thought on it. Sure, they are very different from bacteria and other life, but there is no objective reason why we should exclude them when they are so much more like life than they are like a mote of dust. I hope to see that further explored (as well as self-replicating molecules like prions, RNA, and DNA) in the future of the field rather than just coming up with more and more intricate excuses on why we should continue excluding them from the definition of life.
