As a westerner who grew up learning western music in school and on my own, it’s amazing how impoverished our singular understanding of music is, even when thinking of the most advanced “developed” contemporary western music of the century. Polyrhythms, microtones, and non-centric scalar patterns and systems, built on motion and other kinds of effects (just to name a few) is as sophisticated, developed, and intentional as any music I’ve encountered using strictly ternary harmony. It’s lovely to finally learn.

I wish Americans had the beauty love and joy that essentially comes from the teachings of the East. I remember seeing a picture of a group of friends happy just lying under an apple tree in basic garb and thinking, America will never have this. Their ideas of success and happiness won't allow it. May you touch more souls with your delightful persona, upbeat heart, and beautiful intentions by any avenue. The lesson plan is great, but how you carry it and yourself, like so many of your people, is simply beautiful. :)

Lovely, I'm new to Classical music but I have years of piano training in western classical. I always wante to learn carnatic music as it is one of the most complex form of music. It is so beautiful to hear and sing. The Sa - Pa - Så is the same theory as the overtones in western classical music which is the very basic of the music structure. Thank you for this content.

Wonderful lesson ! I just want to add something that might just be personal to me but I see it in every lesson on music and pitch: when discussing how to know if you are singing the correct not you give the example of singing the incorrect note and say it can be heard as a two different tones (this is true) and then say it is "unpleasant." Calling it unpleasant, displeasing, or some other subjective word is what the majority of musical educators say when discussing pitch. In the context of trying to recreate the correct tone or pitch matching, yes it can be called the incorrect tone. Out of context though I feel it has a very pleasant sound. Especially going from the wrong tone to the right tone in unison with another voice.
