This is still very useful! thank you very much for keeping this online and thank you for a great course, which i attended three years ago. Daniel, Birdlife DK.

Pleased to hear you find it useful Daniel. The complete version of the introductory workshop you attended 3 years ago, complete with exercises, datasets, solutions, demonstration videos and additional material can be found at workshops.distancesampling.org/online-course/ The new website went 'live' about a year ago and is more current and comprehensive than this set of You Tube videos.

thanks Eric..I am just thinking of using distance in birds!! will it be reliable!!??

+Rupak lakha Distance sampling is commonly used for density estimation of birds. An excellent description of use for birds can be found in a paper by Steve Buckland in a 2006 paper published in The Auk. Here is a shortened URL taking you to this paper: bit.ly/1mlJHge One thing to note about distance sampling of birds is that distance sampling can be sensitive to animal movement; try to detect them before they detect you.

Hello Eric, I can´t to do the design the zigzag shape by my phd study, is with dolphins, but don´t know why when I make de design following the instructions at the end in the results I can´t see the lines, the program indicated that are 8 for example or more lines but I can´t see it. I need help, because nobody around me know how to use distance sampling. thank you.

+Yurasi Briceño We have a google groups email list designed for questions just such as this. Pay a visit to groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/distance-sampling where you can search to see if a question similar to this has already been asked. If not, you can subscribe to the list and ask the question there.

+Yurasi Briceño: i have the same problem before, in the end, i realize that i need to enlarge the design map, it is too small until i can only see blank page.

Dear dr Eric , I used the programe and every time used the analysis give me this message, Warning: Analysis engine wrote some output to the console error stream, reproduced below. ** I don't know where the mistake, I wish can help me.

Bassim: There are several possible reasons for this and would need more information to give a detailed reply. However, the most common cause of this problem is installing the software in the default directory. I suggest you install the software again; when asked the directory in which you want the software installed, you specify a simple directory name, such as "C:/Distance". Such a simple directory name contains no spaces in the name. It is the spaces in the default directory that often cause problems. Let me know if this solves your problem.

do we have distance sampling software package for Mac OS?? thanks in advance!
@ericr55527 жыл бұрын
Rahul Sorry, there is no Mac-specific version of Distance. To use Distance on a Mac, you would need Windows emulation software. There is a discussion of this at distancesampling.org/distanceextras.html including this: If you have an old version of Mac OS, then Virtual PC (now owned by by Microsoft) is known to run Distance. For OS X, many emulators are available - see www.macwindows.com/emulator.html for a list and latest news (examples include Parallels and the opensource VirtualBox). If you try any of these, then let us know how they work. Parallels (v11) worked fine on OSX releases “Leopard”, “Snow Leopard”, “Lion”, “Mountain Lion”, “Mavericks” and “El Capitan” on both PowerPC and Intel Macs (thanks to Jack Lawson for providing this information). Another option, if you have an Intel-based Mac, is to use Apple’s Boot Camp software to boot into Windows.

You can use a variety of software emulators to encourage Macs to run Windows software.
