You don't need to multiply the color integers by a number in the same way you did with the size. The base palette in R only has 8 colors: "black", "red", "green3", "blue", "cyan", "magenta", "yellow" and "gray". That means that col=1 and col=9 are both "black" unless you change the palette. You should probably use a palette like "heat.scales" with that data because the degree's magnitude carries information.
