Hi there, Alina from 2024 here 🤗 Welcome to my most embarrassing video. Almost four years ago I didn’t know how to operate a camera properly and hence we all get to enjoy my face taking up 80% of the screen. I’m currently practicing compassion with my younger self and trying very hard not to cringe so much that I delete this - because despite the cringy presentation, the information is still pretty alright 😊 Here’s to giving our younger selves a little grace while gently helping them zoom out in the future 🥂

Hi Rosaria, I only discovered Horney last year. I had never even heard of her before! I have since read all of her books, and for the life of me, I don’t understand why she isn’t top shelf, above the boys (Freud, Adler, Jung, etc). So much more cohesive and relevant, and, in my view, foundational for Positive Psychology. You’re comment stuck out to me, since you are a Psy. Prof., why is she so ignored? (In German, “unterbelichtet”). Is there still a school (strain) of professionals that see themselves in her camp? I have read books (Cloninger, Bonelli (Austrian) that seem to almost verbatim line up with her propositions, and yet she is nowhere in their bibliographies! I have yet to find a book that sites her at all! I find this beyond mysterious. If you, or any other commenter, could shed some light on this, I would be very grateful. I really believe her work is some of the most important work out there in this field.

Another excellent video . As a layperson , Horney is my favorite psychological thinker - I also admire Jung , Winnicot and Rogers . Two things struck me as you outlined her major tenets .When she says that someone who deviates ( one might better say veers } from social and cultural norms is neurotic I thought of the Buddha ( obviously an extreme or outlying example ) who possibly was not neurotic , but rather dissatisfied and searching . Also , in my case , I feel I may combine traits of moving towards along with moving away : pleasing others yet accustomed to restricted life practices within narrow borders . Perhaps she allowed for composite or mixed neuroticism , I'm not sure . Thank you for the wonderful presentation .

Thanks for great introduction to Karen Horney. Never heard about her before. I would be interested in Self-Analisys, and also this is huge demand right now imo. It's also very interesting to know her views on inferiority and superiority, community feeling. Does she agree with these concepts completely or has some other views on the matter of 'ideal' social functioning.

Dear Shu, so nice to hear from you again 😊 Thank you for your kind words. I'm also very interested in how she conceptualizes the possibilities of self-analysis. As soon as I have more time, I'll read her book and hopefully have more helpful things to say then ;) what she shares with Adler is definitely the emphasis on society and interpersonal relationships. I don't have any exact knowledge about how she viewed Adler's ideas but from what I would guess is that they differ in some key concepts: Adler emphasised the striving for superiority/perfection that can shape our lives for better or worse, while Horney highlighted our search for safety and fending off basic anxiety to be determining our functioning. We can see certain overlap, for example in the superiority complex (Adler) and the idealized self (Horney) but for any more elaborate comment I would definitely have to read and learn more first 🙈 All the best, Alina 🍀

Karen Horney is a stone-cold genius: to my mind, the single greatest psychologist in history. I discovered "Our Inner Conflicts" decades ago in a NY bookstore and it changed my life - rather, it changed my conception of myself, but evinced no functional change, something no book can provide. Yet, from my own undoubtedly narcissistic perspective, she might have written the book exclusively for me. It is, for all purposes, an instruction manual for my identity, describing w/ uncanny precision, those aspects of my personality I believed I constructed myself. Instead, as Horney illustrates, my behavior is purely mechanistic, a function of my neurosis, as Horney utilizes the term. Recently, I re-discovered the book, and as I lay in bed each night w/ a pen and highlighter, I am shocked into self-recognition on every page. For the most part, my approach to life is not based on exercise of my free will. Instead, the way I recede from the world - which I've done my entire life - is a purely reactive byproduct of my neurotic orientation: in my case, moving away from people. Horney's insight into human behavior is, in my opinion, orders of magnitude beyond Freud's. Yet, her greatest contribution is the way she analyzes human behavior based on how an individual interacts w/ others, rather than what that individual does in isolation. In doing so, she delineates three modes - as you describe here: moving towards people, or hyper-compliance; moving against people, or conflict-seeking behavior; and moving away from people, or isolating behavior, as in my case. You encapsulated Horney's theories well. To my mind, the multiplicity of diagnostic criteria we use today, in which everything is carefully delineated is unnecessarily complex and draws us away from the underlying psychodynamic reasons for neurotic behavior. More than 75 years ago, in "Our Inner Conflicts," Horney discerned those maladaptive strategies w/ unerring accuracy. Her analytic powers and ability to discern the causes of such behavior are virtually unsurpassable. I STRONGLY recommend viewers buy a copy of "Our Inner Conflicts" esp if you possess problematic and repetitive behavioral traits - ones you suspect are deterministic rather than a byproduct of your free will. I worship at her feet! Thank you for this!

If I wasn't already on your side, you would've won me over. @@PsychodynamicPsychology Thanks so much, Alina! I do some of my best writing here ; Plus, I took a great deal of inspiration from your video. As usual, Horney has already predicted my behavior, "In general, the consequence of...fear (of ridicule)...sets the neurotic apart from others and make(s) him hostile to them. But more important is its power to clip the wings of those afflicted. They do not dare to expect anything of others or to set high goals for themselves." (Our Inner Conflicts, 1972, W.W. Norton, p. 152) Hence, the reason why I devote my creative energies to writing perfect comments on KZbin rather than making videos (as you do) or channeling my energies towards more worthwhile endeavors elsewhere ; Nonetheless, I'm working on it! I was surprised to learn that parents who didn’t care give rise to three possible outcomes. I am a ppl pleaser extraordinaire. I lived in many foster homes where I learned if I displeased the parents, I lost the entire family and went to a new one. By the time I was twelve, I had been in two foster homes. Then, I had eight different ones by the time I was seventeen. (That was four different ones in grade twelve. ) So pleasing ppl was absolutely necessary. So, I pleased my husband (I married at nineteen for complete safety.) in every way a wife could. I learned to be the best at cooking and baking ; at entertaining; and at every other thing. I never wanted to be poor again, nor did I want to change families again. So, I always thought I learned to please ppl in the foster homes; turns out it may have been bc of my totally uncaring parents.

Dear Dean, thank you for sharing your story. And wow, what a life you had so far! Incredible that you made it through all of this and the ability to look back with so much self-awareness. You show real strength, that's really something! From Karen Horney's point of view the lack of feeling safe with your parents lead you to seek safety by means of people-pleasing at the cost of feeling independent and asserting your own needs and wishes. I wish you all the best for the journey ahead 🍀

Thank you for this. I am in therapy and have the compliant trend needing love and approval. It sounds so pretty but in reality painful over the years of attempting to protect and heal myself. Is there any way to heal from this to stop using this hopeless hampster wheel? Thanks , Paula

I can imagine it must be painful. Use your therapy session to work through these patterns. It takes time but your therapist can surely support you in your journey. Best wishes!

Your voice is lovely to listen to! You mention that some of Freud's theories are discredited. But as the video moved along, I began to wonder if all personal psychology suffers from similar problems: isn't it all just someone's hunches based on observation and introspection? And unfalsifiable ? I know that Carl Rogers, for one, tried hard to establish rigorous experimental methodology. Not sure if he succeeded. Scope for a future video? 😉
@PsychodynamicPsychology Жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely! You can understand from looking at their distinct biographies why for example Jung or Klein formulated the theories they did. It's something that psychodynamic theory gets criticism for a lot (even though psychodynamic therapy has been put through extensive research and proven effective). I'm not that knowledgable about humanistic psychology but I might look into it 😊

@@PsychodynamicPsychology I used to 'worship' Jung, until i read the Deirdre Bair biography. He appeared there as just a compulsive over worker.. and a bit of a brute to his wife. 😂

Hi Alina, I have to thank you a lot for this video. I've been struggling with Pure OCD and GAD for years now. This video and Horney's theories might just provide me with the breakthrough I need. I never thought that such psychodynamic theories were helpful for treating anxiety disorders. Since I've been thouroughly ingrained in the idea that Only modern modalities like CBT and ACT are helpful. I have tried psychoteraphy of these forms but they never significantly helped. What I do find helpful instead is viewing things from the perspetive of emotional conflict since I suffer from a lot of compulsive rumination. I kind of see these conflicts as driving my doubts and ruminations. I'm wondering what your thoughts are on this? Best regards, Nick
@PsychodynamicPsychology3 жыл бұрын
Dear Nick, thank you so much for sharing your experience! Elaborate and personal comments like yours always make my day. First of all, I always have to preface that I’m not qualified yet to diagnose or treat mental disorders, so take everything I say with a grain of salt and not as qualified mental health advice. Now that that is out of the way: I’m sorry to hear you’re suffering. Your level of self-reflection and self-awareness that shines through your comment is probably your biggest strength and weakness at the same time. I have so many thoughts on this! So I try my best to keep it short and precise. There is solid scientific evidence for both CBT and ACT for the struggles you describe. But what exactly does scientific evidence mean? It mostly means that for the average patient, this or that standardised procedure works better than others. Plus, in the studies, they mostly “control for the role of the therapist”, meaning they try to take individual characteristics of the therapist out of the picture. While there are many good things that come from this sort of approach, it misses the point that both patients and therapists are different. CBT and ACT are wonderful interventions that helped many people - but not all of them. And psychodynamic approaches (which by the way have also proven their effectiveness scientifically) are often neglected or people don’t even know they exist. I would never suggest that psychodynamic psychotherapy is a superior form of therapy or that it’s the right fit for everyone - because it isn’t - but it is a wonderful fit for many people for whom CBT just hasn’t done the trick. As an extra point that can be made here is that especially the characteristics of the therapist and the match between therapist and patient can be what makes the difference - rather than the standardised procedure. But to go back to your comment: What you describe as an “emotional conflict” is exactly one of the essence of psychodynamic psychotherapy (we just call it internal or intrapsychic conflict). Especially for the ‘neurotic’ struggles you describe (neurotic because they don’t qualify as personality disorders or reveal structural deficiencies), a psychodynamic psychotherapist would work precisely on those underlying inner conflicts that you try to solve with rumination or other compulsive behaviour and on the underlying anxiety that was replaced by a generalised anxiety. Besides the orientation (let that be CBT or psychodynamic) it’s really important that you feel like you and your therapist are a good match. Especially for a psychodynamic psychotherapy a lot of work is done within the therapeutic relationship that unfolds between the patient and the therapist. So, try to make appointments with a few therapists to see with whom you feel comfortable and who also challenges you appropriately. I think if you find a good psychotherapist, the psychodynamic approach might be a good fit for you. I wish you all the best for your journey! 🍀

I suffer. Over the years I've read dozens of self help books. You Tube provides more possible access for answers to help me find peace. Karen is right. Childhood trauma is at the core of what I call my dark companion. At 60+ years it still festers daily. I'm beginning to think that death alone will be my only release. Karen has taken me to the closest I've come to discovering a solution: Lesson my anxiety. Its been difficult for me to see the wood through the trees when my head is pursued by negative images. I never saw myself as neurotic. Now, its quite obvious.

I'm so sorry that you feel this way, that must be incredibly hard. I would wholeheartedly encourage you to seek professional help, some things are too difficult for us to venture through them alone. Sometimes we need someone by our side to guide and help us. Depending on where you live, there are are different phone numbers to call when it all gets too much: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_suicide_crisis_lines It can really help to talk to someone who can help you to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I wish you all the best.
