Hi James, mate you're introduction to kubernetes/microservices was absolutely brilliant. It's given me so much information. as a matter of fact I paused throughout and replicated everything you did and managed to discover myself why the exampleapp didn't work even though I actually pulled mine from my own docker hub and it was the tag in the image. In addition having been a stubborn vi user and refused to use any other editors I finally downloaded visual studio code and added all the extensions to docker and kubernetes etc, wow you opened a can or worm... I never going back :) Again thank you so much for you contribution, hope to hear from you again in the future...

So if you are trying to follow this step by step you will have to figure out from the docs - which is also a learning process. Highly recommended. Thanks.

For those using this around Oct 18 - the deployment YAML image isn't available (image: jamesquigley/exampleapp:v1.0.0) but it works if changed to tutum/hello-world. The service isn't discoverable in the web browser so I'm guessing we now need an Ingress Controller and Ingress Resource: kubernetes.io/docs/concepts/services-networking/ingress/

Just started watching, so far very good introduction! To really differentiate the role of Docker Engine from VM Hypervisor, I would depict Docker horizontally above the containers, not sandwiched between the containers and Host OS as shown at 8:07. Docker is just another process that performs the role of a life cycle manager - a process that manages the creation, start, stop, and deletion of a container. Docker doesn’t intercept any system calls made by the processes within the “container” and doesn’t perform resource coordination like a Hypervisor. The container processes make resource requests directly to the OS - Docker isn’t at all involved in this conversation. In fact one can kill the Docker daemon and the containers would continue to run.
