I think realist is a theory analogize international relationship in a world with very simplistic assumes: 1. Communication between states is hard ( It takes a long time to spread message from Rome to Persia etc). 2. Wars are not existential( There is no nukes). 3. economic dependence is weak. ( There is more value of another state as an economic partner than an enemy). I think realist is pessimistic, but it is also dangerous in our world.
