Great overview! I have gained understanding of some elements of what Taoism is and this video really took those elements in an-easy-to-understand summary. I appreciate the contribution! Much to gain from this philosophy, too.

you have a calm manner of presenting the material that i enjoy. thank you for making these videos available. i have a question and a comment. firstly, the question: in tao te ching, the words themselves, is there some chinese grammar that allows one to know that the tao is the central component? this is in reference to what is commonly said, “the tao and it’s power” or “the tao and it’s virtue”. how do i know that it is not a book about the tao and the te? obviously it is called tao-ism and not te-ism, but blindly following along with what people commonly assume doesn’t help me much. i’ve read that in some discoveries the order of the two sections were reversed, and the chapters dealing with te were presented first, so i wonder about this a lot. secondly, the comment: talking about “harnessing” the tao definitely makes it more palatable and interesting as a subject of thought for westerners, but i wonder if that is something the author of these poems would intend or agree with. one can harness an ox or a horse, one can try to harness one’s own tongue (and sometimes be successful), but how does one harness an abstraction that one cannot name nor truly understand? maybe this is a super-fine nit-pick, and if so i apologize. but, i’m missing something in that figure of speech, and will happily receive any other thoughts you have on it. many thanks and best wishes

I guess my biggest frustration with all things being in flow is that there’s no way to identify if something could not be in flow. Usually when a word over extends to covering everything, it loses meaning.

Perhaps -- at some point -- will you say something about the precursor to The Tao... I have read it to be The Pa Kua (a 6000 yr old, cult belief attributable to a mythical figure by name, Fu Hsi) that teaches the non-oppositional dualistic concept espoused in the Tao te Ching/Jing in the language of Yin (earth) and Yang (sky). Thank you...

I think the part about harnessing the Dao is not quite correct. That statement is pretty bold, audacious, for the mere human to speak of harnessing the Dao. More accurately, it's flowing in harmony with the Dao, recognizing it and seeking it out, understanding how its ways differ from everything we might think we know, which has been constructed without deference to the Dao.

Tao te ching is just a written form of Lao Tzu's words. One cannot fully understand it until they become enlighted. And when they become enlightened, they won't need the book. Too many people think that the book are words of wisdom when it's just Lao Tzu's way of translating his knowledge to common folks. What rests beyond Tao Te Ching is the true Tao, but has anyone seen it? Masters that have achieved it are claimed to be in seclusion and have isolated themselves from the real world. So we will never know, perhaps when we become enlighted will we know true Tao.

Enlightenment isn't something you become, it's something you realize once you let go of every opinion. It's realizing that you are already everything you need to be and know everything you need to know, and you can effortlessly flow with all that is.

I do not believe there is such a thing as an "enlightened" individual. There are simply individuals who have made the maintenance of ego death a priority in their lives, but that is a paradox for the desire to maintain ego death is itself a product of the ego. Taoism is not an existentialism. It is not a series of truths that can be deduced from observing our realities, rather it is an Absurdism. It is the relinquishment of satiating your desire for truth in favor of submitting yourself to the uncertainties of your experience. Those uncertainties are the flow. That which obstructs the flow is the positing of certainty, truth, and dogma, for they are all unyielding and unchanging. Taoists have done this with the words of Lao Tzu as have the Buddhists with the words of Siddhartha and Christians with the words of Christ. By defining the Tao, by focussing on enlightenment as if it were a goal for you to achieve, you are manifesting it as a myriad thing and in your quest to achieve oneness with the flow, you have become the rock that obstructs it.

Happy Resurrection Day Easter. The First Christmas - Jesus Christ came to earth from heaven to save us from pre-existing sin. The First Good Friday - Jesus Christ crucified to The Cross, died willingly for remission of our pre-existing sins. The Resurrection Day, also linked to Easter - Jesus Christ resurrected from death. Jesus Christ made entry to Holy Heaven free through Him. Repent of pre-existing sins to Jesus Christ and be saved. Easy.
