Thanks for this informative video! I have a few questions: You showed the distribution of the lyre historically throughout northern Europe/Scandinavia, but not the mediterranean or even Africa where there is history of the lyre. Are you distinguishing the 'Germanic' lyre from all the other lyres? Also, did the lyre completely disappear from northern Europe/Scandinavia for centuries before it was 'rediscovered' in the 20th Century? Can you explain why? Is the history and playing of Mediterranean lyres also broken for a period of centuries? Thanks!

Northern European lyres and southern European lyres are the same insturment , but different sub-categories, due to very different looks and construction methods. Evidence does suggest they were played almost identically. When the northern European lyre stopped being used is complex and not agreed upon. In Germany they disapeared early and seem to have been replaced by the medieval figure of eight lyre. In Norway they seem to have lasted the longest before being replaced by other medieval lyres and eventually the Kravik. To answer your second question, the northern lyre was lost to history. Referred to as a Harpa(norse) and Hearpe(anglo-saxon), historians believed the writing to be referring to Harps. When the Sutton Hoo lyre was dug up in the 1930s the archaeologists who discovered it, reasembled it, awkwardly, in the form of a harp - for 20 years a replica harp was on display in the British museum. There were a couple of 19th century finds of these instruments. One in Abingdon England, but so few pieces were found, it wasnt identified as a musical instrument until after the Sutton Hoo lyre was discoved and there was something to compare the few fragments to. And the another lyre was found in Oberflacht in Germany, almost intact, which was put on display in a museum until destroyed in WWII. No knowledge of this lyre seems to have made it to England which would have helped a lot in reconstructing the Sutton Hoo lyre.
