Introduction to the Counting of the Omer

The 49 days between the Festival of Passover and the Festival of Shavuot are days of great spiritual potential that challenge us to examine our character, and work on refining our character traits and attributes. The Torah commands us to count each of these days and weeks, totaling seven complete weeks: "And you shall count for yourselves, from the morrow of the rest day, from the day when you bring the Omer of the waving -- seven weeks, they shall be complete." Rabbi Richman explains that we are not only counting, but telling the story of our lives. Thanks for the clarification on why barley was used as the Omer korbanot. I already knew barley was considered the lowest form of grain (despite loving mushroom barley soup), but I could only theorize on why Hashem would insist on animal feed.

Thank you for your empowering guidance from the start...counting the Omer is an uplifting and revealing experience. I recognize where I still have remainders of a slave mentality and understand slowly that my task is to exercise my will in choice: maintain the slave mentality, disentangle myself from it and also ask Hashem for help. If I'm not counting the days then at least (from this day onwards) I'm eagerly awaiting the (historical) day that HaSjem gave His torah to Mosje and his people and effectively (after a long time), to me (a non-Jew) as well.
