The Pinhoti is the best hiking in Alabama because of its variety. Second best is Sipsey Wilderness because of its beauty.

I hike in the Sipsey as much as possible. It’s only and hour away. I think I’m going to try the Pinhoti this summer.

I LOVED the solitude on the Pinhoti! Living in New Orleans, LA we often poke fun at Alabama but no more! It is a beautiful state and has reallly great people.

Hey! Here I am eating some Sea Salt and Vinegar potato chips and watching this video when Dixie opens a bag of Sea Salt and Vinegar chips. Timing is everything. I'm glad to see that you are back on the trail. It's been worth the wait.

60!: Nimblewill Nomad's age when he completed his first long hike. It was so encouraging to learn this one afternoon last year when I enjoyed meeting him on Flagg Mountain, with fearless hummingbirds stopping by.

I've spent some time parooting around on the Pinhoti; 18 years ago (gasp), I worked a contractor job at Gunter in Montgomery for a few months - I would alternate weekends, one weekend I would go home to Louisiana and the wife and kids, the other I would stay in Montgomery. On those weekends I would drive around exploring, and that's how I found the Pinhoti. That area around Cheaha is a pretty area in a pretty state - years later, I took my flatlander kids there as their first exposure to mountains.

When you get near Cheaha St Park, take the short side trip out to McDill Point, a beautiful overlook. There are remnants of a crashed small aircraft along the trail to McDill Point. One of my favorite spots in Alabama. Glad you are finally getting out.

Live in Alabama too and starting this hobby recently as there are a lot of wilderness and trails in the state. So far I've hit a lot of trails around Tuscaloosa and Birmingham, now I'm eying the Pinhoti as a warm up for the AT. Planning on section hiking, can't commit to long term trips. Thanks for the video, gave me some ideas.

You really got my attention. I live in Northern California and I tend to think about western trails. On top of that I was raised in New Jersey by Yankees who told me that the south was dangerous and southerners were crazy. I got over some of that but I really never think about the south. Thing is I’m 67. I’m not good for much more than 8 or 10 miles a day and I have real problems with altitude. I have a little money and plenty of time. The Pinhoti sounds like a trail I could hope to finish. I’m going to look into it.

Can't wait to see more of the Pinhoti! I'm right down here in florida & was planning on making it my first backpacking trip this spring, but unfortunately my sister shipped all of backpacking gear home from MT without insurance and it's been gone for months... Hopefully Dixie's videos will keep me happy in the meantime. :-} (Pro-tip for y'all: $30 of insurance > losing $1,000s in gear! Get a tracking #!!!!!)

I love your commentary on the history of the trail. We used to meet with state officials ALL THE TIME trying to get the Pinhoti attached to the AT. Then in 2008, we placed the boulder on the trail at Cheaha. So much hard work has come to fruition.

I am so glad to see this latest vid ! The Pinhoti Trail ! I began watching 2 other vids on the Pinhoti Trail this year, however, they both sort of fizzled out. One due to major path flooding, and one ran out of time due to cold snow slow moving!!! Glad to see you doing some!

It's very interesting to see this through hiker culture developing before our eyes. I am a real history buff. This reminds me of the days after Siddhartha (affectionately The Bhudda). There was this fervent "monk seeking enlightenment" period that lasted a century or so. These monks traveled endlessly seeking enlightenment, and they were an accepted and even revered part of the culture. They were given food and shelter when they could not provide it through their own efforts, kind of like trail magic, Patreon, KZbin..

Hey Dixie! Great intro video. Your comment at the end about being embarrassed is so true of many of us. I live very close to the PCT in SoCal and I never knew it was here. I never knew the PNT existed and went right through Whidbey Island when I lived there. You have inspired so many of us to get out and hike, to learn what’s around us, be adventurous and have fun. My first local jaunt after watching you for months was summiting Mt Baden Powell back in July. Keep inspiring Dixie, and hike on!!!

Good Info! I am also in Bama. I started hiking more regularly last year. I am using it as a way to get my boys more involved with the outdoors. We have done mostly short day hikes.
