Welcome to the Sword Art Online Wikia and this is your introduction to Sword Art Online Volume 21, Unital Ring. In this video, we will briefly cover the timeline, main locations and key characters, as well as events of Volume 21. Thus, the video will feature spoilers from Unital Ring I.
Sword Art Online Volume 21, Unital Ring I, is the beginning of the fifth main arc of the Sword Art Online series, taking place after the events of the Alicization Arc. Unital Ring brings forth a brand new adventure for the cast of characters in a new world, created as an amalgam of numerous VRMMO games on The Seed Nexus forcefully merged into one. Now finding themselves in a Battle Royale style survival game, the players will have to find a way to survive in this new world in order to uncover the mysteries behind it, as all players are only given one single life: anyone who dies in-game will no longer be able to log in with their account.
The main events of Unital Ring I primarily take place inside the new VRMMO Survival Game, Unital Ring, after Kirito's gang in ALO are suddenly and forcefully converted into it.
Suddenly assailed by earthquakes at the Log House, Kirito, Asuna and Alice found themselves in the middle of a collapsing New Aincrad. To save their falling Log House, they managed to divert the large chunk of land beneath it into a river they saw on the ground for a relatively softer landing. However as Kirito turned back up to see what happened to the New Aincrad, their wings suddenly disappeared, plunging them into the river with no flight. When Kirito and Asuna emerged from the water, they saw their elf ears had disappeared, although Alice retained her cat ears. With a sense of foreboding, Kirito attempted to summon the menu to retrieve his weapons from his inventory with the usual menu-calling gesture, but no menu showed up. Despite his brief moment of panic, a tutorial window introduced them to a new, unfamiliar menu, while the log out button… was fortunately still in sight.
But that was practically the sole relief for the trio plunged into a massive unknown. Their status window now marked them as being “Level 1” players, their entire item storage was now gone, save for 2 pieces of equipment each, while the communication menu had revealed that their entire friends lists had been reset. But the real scope of the incident became clear when Kirito finally logged out and saw the top news headline of MMO Today:
Large Scale Disorder in 100+ VRMMO worlds
This was just the beginning of Unital Ring, affecting not just ALO but rather The Seed Nexus in its entirety. Old friends will be making their return, while new characters will bring new mysteries into the mix.

@k don't know - not enough of the series has been written (or at least fan-translated into English). But outside of Selka (who put herself into Deep Freeze until Alice returned), Stica and Laura (Tiese's and Ronie's descendants, respectively), they're going to be new Underworld characters. It's been 200 years - the Underworld characters we're familiar with have either long passed away, or the ones that had their ages permanently frozen by Administrator were sealed away due to the ages of their fluctlights.

@k we don't know. The only things announced today were the official announcement for SAO: Progressive and a "soft" announcement for Unital Ring at the end of the Alicizaiton finale. But it wouldn't surprise me if something for Moon Cradle is announced at the SAO "event" in November, considering it involves the voice actors for what would be most of the characters that would be involved in a Moon Cradle arc.

It was a fan theory but then it’s became somewhat cannon so that just how that happened. Though keep in mind, anything that up to this point that release will likely be cannon as more ppl want it. Just technically the way how sequel anime go, especially with the same author and gaming culture is just a circle of references to something similar. Just look how much SAO using hot topics games as references (final fantasy 11, final fantasy 14, destiny, destiny 2, halo, monster hunter, diablo, phantasy star, persona, star ocean, even racing games, and technically the expand on UI as AI that most games MMOs use on. Path of Exile and Korean and Chinese games etc) Just something that the story wouldn’t make sense at the point that they need a main for the plot. Not really bad but not really something important much except the battle cutscenes. Compare to how many other series. You have a sub genre game sequel for this one and anything similar follow.

A movie of the first few chapters would be awesome lol…just to tease the release and a taste do what’s to come…sao has been on a roll like crazy lol I wasn’t really into the style season 4 was going for but after forcing myself to watch afew episodes I got hooked…lol reminded me of watching Star Trek TNG for the first time and with that I didn’t wanna watch because I thought it would be lame and the effects would detract from the experience but it didn’t and it was actually addicting and pretty awesome lol in the ended for both of them I turned into a fan and loved them and wanted more…only SAO is still young and on a roll and Star Trek is sorta on low tide

S.C. 2017 None of them. The first official English translation of Unital Ring comes out January 19th, 2021 I believe. If you haven’t read Moon Cradle then I recommend those but those are from Ronie’s POV a year and half after War of Underworld ends. It shows how life in Underworld is after the war and what has happened. You get plenty of Kirito moments and some nice Asuna moments as well. If you have already read Moon Cradle or don’t want to and you just want to hop into Unital Ring then you can find some fan translations online.

@@CrankiestManX95 Progressive is the floor-by-floor telling of the Aincrad arc. To be as general about it as possible to avoid spoilers, a few days after defeating the floor 1 boss, Kirito and Asuna hook back up, then eventually form a party, with Kirito's intentions of training her to be the kind of player that could be a significant leader and everyone's hope of survival - essentially what she did become. As far as Asuna's backstory, that's actually really simple to the point of being dull - she was an obedient rich girl whose life was basically planned out for her by her parents, until one day her brother, who bought the NerveGear and SAO for his own use, had to go on a business trip (he was a fairly new employee at his dad's company RECT), and he let Asuna use it for the day - a day that in her case would be more than two years.

Isnt it better to not have more seasons... The whole of SAO has to end at some point and Alicization could have been the best way to end everything with a massive blast because it truly kicked the ass of haters and cleaned the very dirtied name and reputation of SAO. I'm nervous, anxious and frightened that after such a 100/10 arc, SAO is just gonna be destroyed by haters if future seasons would fail to live up to the hype and greatness that Alicization brought. 😩 No matter what SAO gives me, I'd love and enjoy every episode of it but I'm scared for the show to be shitted again by everyone after gaining such a throne.

Ye after sao progressive(shows all the stuff of aincrad from s1, like asunas pov, new other CANON characters for unital ring, how they defeated every single boss, etc.) they will probably bring out the moon cradle arc(the 200 years of asuna and kirito stuck in underworld) as a movie. Then eventually when unital ring light novel is finished they will 100% make an anime adaptation. Sadly, unital ring will be the last arc of sao, ending the story of our beloved characters.

Correction, Underworld is built using the Seed. "The Seed Nexus" is the interconnected network that allows the ease of conversion between games, effectively the Seed Network. Project Alicization is not part of the Seed Nexus, as it has no public connections.

Well technically very technology from SAO get transferred to AW. Also it’s more of how ppl think it’s cannon about the story like that anyway. Still AW is a different protagonist. It isn’t going to be like how the sequel like. Not just SAO, any series with the same author and same setting will likely be mentioned. On top that ppl really want to expand the story from the crossover chapter in spin off. Just look at Fate franchise. Just make a bunch of spin off series then pick the one ppl like most and make that a sequel >_> Nothing really matter anyway.

I think it depends on Reki, the author. I believe originally Alicization was going to be the last arc, but his editor convinced him to continue writing. I could be wrong about this though. I love SAO and wish for it to continue for a long time but at the same time I know it has to end eventually.

I have not read Unital Ring yet, but many people speculate that Unital Ring is the last arc but I was trying to say is that it depends on if his editor is able to get Reki to continue writing SAO further. I would like to see Moon Cradle adapted. I really enjoyed reading it from Ronie’s POV. I was kinda disappointed that he won’t continue it..... for now. Reki hinted in his afterwards of book 20 that he might continue the story of Moon Cradle but he kinda doesn’t have to because he kinda answered all the questions to what happened during those 200 years. I would still like to know about it in detail though.

Unital Ring is supposed to be the last arc of sao as a whole and Reki said he wants to end the series with the marriage of Kirito and Asuna irl. However he also stated that he would like to go back and continue the moon cradle side story and he still has to finish progressive which is supposed to be a floor by floor of Aincrad SAO. So we should have lots of SAO for a long time. (I have not read the LN's although I would like to but this is what I've heard Reki has said from pretty much everywhere.)

Unital Ring is the Sequel to Alicization, the same way Alicization is a sequel to the previous stories. Sequel does not necessarily mean "The exact same thing just continues". And if you watched this video, you should have all those questions answered already... And if you watched the other video you commented on, you would know we do not know when IIW will tie into the story...

The fan translations currently only go up to volume 18, which is the last volume of the alicization arc. The official translations on YenPress currently go up to volume 20 (vol 19-20 is moon cradle, a side story that covers specific events of when kirito and asuna were stuck in the underworld for 200 years during alicization arc). The official translation for Unital Ring 1 (volume 21) comes out next year in January. If you really want to read the unital ring volumes in the light novel, then I recommend you buying them from the YenPress website as YenPress currently has the latest translations for the sao light novel, and is releasing the translations at a faster pace than the fan translations. There are fan translations if you're willing to look hard enough on the Internet, but Unital Ring 1 does get officially released in English in January 2021.

Silas Ohien of course, even though A-1 pictures haven’t officially announced it yet. Unital ring is part of the main series and is the sequel to the alicization arc, so it would be animated just like any other arc in the main series. A-1 pictures director announced in an official interview in 2017, that they will animate the entire sao series. Also, the anime adaption of the alicization arc was very popular, so it’s safe to assume that unital ring will be getting an anime adaption. Although before that, it’s been announced that there will be the anime adaption of sao progressive, and I’m thinking it’s likely that an adaption for sao moon cradle (which is a side story that covers specific events in the 200 years kirito and asuna were stuck in the underworld during alicization) will happen as well, likely in the form of a movie, although not officially announced yet. But anyways, it’s probably going to take a long time before unital ring is adapted into anime form, because it’s still ongoing in the light novel, in fact only the first 4 volumes of sao unital ring have been released (so far vol 21-24), so it’s probably going to be a long wait before unital ring is animated. I recommend you read the sao light novels of the main series if you’re a big fan of sao. The YenPress translations currently only go up to volume 20, which is the last volume of moon cradle (last vol of alcization is vol 18, vol 19-20 is moon cradle), and the translation for volume 21 (the first volume of unital ring) will be released next year in January on YenPress. He never said he would. His current game handle is Kirito based on *Kiri*gaya Kazu*to*. His real parents' surname was Narusaka. So he just thought about how his name would look like, if he still had the surname, which would be *Naru*saka Kazu*to*, thus Naruto.

It is a slow burner, even more so than how Alicization was. Basically, the first book is setting up the new game and the circumstances at hand. The latter books establish some big picture stuff, introduce the new villain and tease some other things, along with returning characters here and there. As of Unital Ring IV, we still did not get a clear antagonist or goal. Similarly, Alicization only became about defeating Quinella with Alicization Turning, only to become War of Underworld with Exploding. Unital Ring feels similar if not slower paced.
