AS a left handed man, that video really helped me to realise that I knew how to make a vibrato since I was 14 or so but apparently I was performing on the wrong instrument.

Dear Abigail, I was rather confused about the vibrato movement, now, after watching your vibrato playlist I find myself much more confident. Thank you so much. Greetings from Mexico!

Great tutorial on vibrato. Not a lot of people know how to do this style and resort to the "doorknob" version which leads to all kinds of tension. Abigail is spot on with her explanation. Bravo!

I no longer have a violin and was gifted a cello. You are a wonderful teacher ! I find myself in violin vibrato autopilot as I do not realize sometimes that I am doing it. The cello tone is so beautiful. I am finally playing cello music after 2 months of floundering around. I had to learn to tune the cello and practice bowing. I am so happy to be playing music ! I have started to play along with you and Suzuki. I am on my way. Thank you for sharing your cello talents !

Abigail, I love all your videos and the passion and enthusiasm you have in each and every one of them. This vibrato lesson is the best I've seen - I like the idea of using the 3rd and 4th fingers together when doing vibrato with your 4th! You would be a fantastic cello teacher - and it seems there are not many of those around!

Thank you for taking the time to respond. My story, even though you didn't ask (grin), is that I am a teacher in Almaty, Kazakhstan. On the side, I study under a cellist (2nd chair) in the national conservatory (English lessons for cello lessons). The glitch is that my Russian is poor and his English is a work in progress. Further, he is one of those innate genius' who struggle to articulate what they do to be successful with the instrument.

Abigail,. I realize that you've moved to a different topic in your videos but I have to tell you that I have been taking lessons from a teacher for about 6 months. I am a musician, a pianist and guitarist and vocalist. That's what I majored in college long long ago.I decided when I retired that I wanted to learn the cello so I started teaching myself with videos online. I started playing a year and a 1/2 ago. The teacher I have now is actually a violinist and doesn't really teach me how to play the cello. I have learned more from 1 or 2 of your videos and playing along than I have in a whole month of lessons with her. I have quit the lessons and will someday find another teacher but for now you are a great help to me. Thank you so much and good luck in all you do. Be happy!

I wouldn't say that you should remain in place. You open and close your hand to balance yourself around the new note. This means your thumb (and everything else) will shift around just a bit. But of course you have to go the right distance. Figuring out how to do that just takes a lot of practice. Good luck!

When playing notes I noticed I could get vibrato easier on my second, third, and fourth finger when I lifted my thumb off the back of the cello. Is that ok to do or should I try to keep my thumb in place? What general advice to you have about keeping the thumb on the back of the cello?

I've recently made a series of 4 youtube videos to help cellists begin to develop vibrato. This is how I teach my students - in stages - so that there are progressive steps to master until a basic vibrato appears. If you're interested, search for "cello vibrato"

As for the balancing act. I suppose more practice (probably just running my vibrato through each finger back and forth in first-fourth positions until I can move about without becoming sharp or flat. Maybe I don't put enough pressure on the string when I pin it to the fingerboard. I find that almost any time I attempt continuous vibrato and move to or through the 4th finger it is either very abrupt of I lose my intonation. humpff, back to practice room. ;) Thanks again, from Almaty, Kazakhstan.

I am working on exercises to have a continual and consistent vibrato as I move from one finger to the next. For whatever reason, I'm having issues remaining in place. What I mean is, let's say I'm in first hand position and as I move from finger 1 to 2 and then around 3, I start noticing my hand has moved and my intonation is off. I don't want to squeeze the thumb, though. By the time I reach the 4th finger, it is a mess. How do you remain in place while moving the vibrato around the fingers?

Hi, one question, I would like to learn playing Cello, but not annoying the others, is a Electric Cello for example NS NXT4 Cello a "silent" option in order just to play using headphones? Or even though is "silent" the strings do some sounds in the environment? Finally do you know what should the best method to star playing Cello?
@abigailmchugh-grifa8639 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry but I don't know anything about electric cellos. The best way to start playing cello is to find yourself a good teacher. That's almost certainly more important than what books you use.
@visorescolector9 жыл бұрын
thanks for your answer, in fact I will find out for a Cello Teacher first.
@MissAwesomeFashion9 жыл бұрын
Visores Colector I have both a "normal" cello and an electric cello! I think both is great! Of couse, the real cello has some special "touch" to the sound, compared to the electric one. But for a starter, I think an electric one would be a great starter, if you are looking for training for yourself. But as Abigail said, a teacher would be the best, and then you would need a real cello. :)
