Hey the .dta file wont open, it says it isn't in stata format, any idea why?
@DavidBraudt6 жыл бұрын
Typically, that error occurs when either the file path (where the file is stored on the computer) or the file name are incorrect. To check the file path, navigate to the file on your computer, right click on the file and then click on "properties." With the file properties displayed you should see a line that says something to the effect of "file location." Make sure that the file path from the file properties matches either: (1) the file path in the use command or (2) the working directory (i.e., the file path depicted at the bottom left of the stata window). Then check that the file name is correctly written (.dta and all). I hope this helps.

I have got a little question about one of the final sections of the video. When you input the predict command, it automatically assumes you want to predict the GPA scores. How does STATA know? Cheers, and thank you for making this incredible video!
@DavidBraudt7 жыл бұрын
The predict command uses the regression coefficients from the last model estimated to produce a variable containing the predicted value of the outcome (dependent) variable for that last model. So, in this case we'd just estimated a linear regression with GPA as the outcome variable; thus, when we use the predict command STATA uses the regression coefficients from our model to predict the GPA values. If we ran two regression commands, say one predicting GPA and the other predicting college attendance, the predict command would generate predicted values for whichever model was estimated last. I'm glad you found the video helpful and I hope the above answers your question.

I downloaded the entrance.txt from the new link and it has 9 columns of numbers instead of 8. It's causing the candy cane affect in the data. When I add in a dummy variable name to account for the 9th column, the numbers don't have the candy cane affect because the id, gender, age, gpa columns seem fine, but the act, sat, actsat, and athlete columns are off. How can I account for this 9th column of numbers, so I can basically ignore it and have it not affect the table? Thank you.
@DavidBraudt8 жыл бұрын
Hi Lauren, thank you for pointing that out. I don't know how another column was added to the text file, but an updated version of the file has been posted to my website.
@ljlew6138 жыл бұрын
Even if there was another column (9 columns total), just curious--do you know why editing the command to include the extra column label such as "infile id gender age gpa act sat actsat athlete race using whateverfile" still messes up the last 4 columns of data? Thank you for your replies.
@DavidBraudt8 жыл бұрын
It shouldn't. When I looked at the file I did exactly that and it imported just fine. Also, as of Stata 13 the "infile" command was replaced with "import delimited" which will no longer allow users to make the error of not listing a variable in the variable list of the "infile" command. I made the video prior to the new command so I don't mention it, additionally "infile" will still work since Stata allows old commands to continue to function. The syntax with the import command is: import delimited id gender age gpa act sat actsat athlete using "filename"

Hi David, I have got a problem with a forval function and Stata tells me that i have an error 612, unexpected ending; tried to solve the problem with different ways by adding extras thing such as #delimited. *EDIT: Add location of first exogenous account scalar exo = 1/27 * EDIT: Need to change ranges in all "forval" commands so as to match the location of such accounts. * Production forval x = 1/16 { * Factors forval x = 17/21 { * Institutions forval x = 22/24 { * Exogenous forval x = 25/27 { can u help me to solve that?)
@DavidBraudt9 жыл бұрын
+Nauryz Baizakov , the code you posted doesn't really work (i.e. it is incomplete). If that is the actual code you are using then you need to add ending "}" for each loop. If the above is not really your code here is my primary method for diagnosing errors in loops: Use various display commands after segments of code within your loop to help you identify when the loop fails. For example, forval x = 1/20 { di in red "Stop 1" *code that you actually care about here* foreach v of varlist v1-v20 { di in red "Stop 2" *again, actual code here* } di in red "Stop 3" } In the above I have three distinct display commands that will appear as Stata runs through the loop. If the loop (actually two loops) are successful then you will see three separate "Stop X", where X = 1, 2, and 3, in red text in the output window. If, however you only see one or two you know where Stata is executing code in your loop and where it isn't. The more of such display commands you use the more accuracy in identifying where the error is, but I would recommend using them strategically in places you think are problematic first and then refining the area.

Just a heads up for anyone else running into this problem. Make sure your file directory doesn't have any spaces. For example if you save your files to a folder called "STATA practice", make sure to rename it "STATA_Practice" I'm not undermining intelligence, just an honest error that can happen to anyone.
@DavidBraudt7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for posting TWS. To be explicit, Stata will break at any white spaces. Consequently, text that has a space in it must be between double quotes (i.e. "something here"), whereas text without any white spaces can be specified without the double quotes (i.e. something_here).

I just downloaded the file and opened it using the following command: use C:\Users\Braudt\Downloads\Entrance.dta, clear You will need to change the directory path to wherever you've saved the dataset.
@mihirparekh92856 жыл бұрын
The directory path is exactly where the other two files are placed. Stata opens the other two files seamlessly, but it doesn't recognize Entrance.dta!
@DavidBraudt6 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry you're having trouble Mihir.... You might try using the drop-down menus (File -> Open -> Navigate to file and click open) to load the file and see if that solves anything. Failing that, I would recommend re-downloading the file and trying again. I tried downloading the file from two different browsers and it worked fine, so I'm not sure what might be causing the issue on your end.... My best guess is that it has something to do with how your computer is saving the file, or what file types Stata recognizes. ... This might be the case if you are using a previous version of Stata (e.g. Stata 11 or older) Also, you can do everything using the entrance.txt file since the underlying data are identical. The example of loading the data with the "use" command is just there for instructive purposes.
