Can I just say - this is exactly what Vatican II should bring us and hopefully will bring more of in the decades to come. Absolutely stunning. Reminds me very much of the Novus Ordo I attended at Saint Ann’s in Charlotte, most of which was in Latin.

My parish--which has the best music program in the diocese--doesn't quite reach these heights, but it's close. A good mass, with this level of care and dedication put into the music and the reverence of the liturgy, is a magnificent, even transcendental experience, Novus Ordo notwithstanding. It's what keeps the obligation to attend from feeling like a chore. Not "oh, I have to go to mass" but "oh, I **want** to go to mass." Nothing is more important to the life and health of the church in my opinion.

@@TowboatinI heard someone say relatively recently that as a priest putting resources and the right people in charge of music at mass can make such a difference in the reverence people give to the mass and the sacraments. Though it holds a special place in my heart, you don’t have to have high renaissance polyphony to have beautiful and reverent music for the mass. This is a great example of reverent music still being composed, and I hope as a musician (I’m in school to be a choir director) to cultivate this in the parishes I attend throughout my life.

Paul, I cannot get enough of your compositions. I wish all Catholic liturgical music were like this. Placed against most modern compositions, it stands out as something uniquely moving. Yet despite how evidently beautiful this is, so many would dismiss it for "not fostering active participation." I struggle to understand the dictatorial insistence upon congregational singing, when pieces like this exist. I hope we have a change of heart in my lifetime.

Indeed, this piece is so hauntingly beautiful. Pieces like this I'm sure could make an atheist entertain the thought God's existence for a moment. It is wild because this piece is actually rather easy to participate in.

Thank you! This music brings reverance to what Mass is, the eternal sacrifice of Christ as payment for our sins. This music expresses the sacrificial character.

Return to the Catholic church. With the possible exception of extraordinary means of grace, there is no salvation outside of the one Holy Catholic and Apostolic church. Pax Vobiscum.

@@VikingMakery As a Catholic apologist, I am *very* well-learned regarding the Bible, early church history, Christian theology, and word history, as well as the languages Hebrew, Syriac aramaic, and Greek. My statement doesn't contradict Scriptural tradition in the slightest. However, the doctrine that the Bible is the sole authority of Christian life on earth is an early church heresy and does, in fact, contradict scripture.

It is almost unconcievable that this is contemporary liturgical hymn. It reminds me of Taize song-prayers, and of some more ancient blessed sacral music. I wish I was attending this Holly Eucharist. Bless you Mr.Jernberg. Pave, Croatia

The lyrics are from the Graduale Romanum (translated to English), based on Romans 5:5 and the opening verses of Psalm 103. We will try to post these in the description box soon! You can also find them in the music score of the “Propers for the Sacrament of Confirmation” that is available at pauljernberg.com/shop. Thanks for asking!
