For years I made a collage class. Now I`ve decide to share this class with you on KZbin. This is the first exercise and it is about intuitive collage
For this 1st exercise we need 4 x 4 inch paper, which can be a cheap paper. I take a 170g heavy paper. In this small format the paper will not curl that much anyway.
Otherwise you can leave these little collages under heavy books overnight. Then in the morning they are smoothed out.
It is important that you protect them from sticking together with baking paper or Wax paper.
Then I have a magazine to work with, a brush and my soft gel mat. I also have the scissors and the punch within reach.
Now comes the 1st fun part. Like me, you go through your collection of collage paper and choose about 10 different papers that you particularly like today. It is like shopping in your collage stack.
Take what you really like today and what appeals to you, even if there is valuable paper with you. Nothing is too good to be glued in today.
Just make sure that you have light and dark, but also colored and neutral papers to choose from. If you do, it will be easier to collage. i'm thinking of tonal values and quiet areas.
In the first part of the exercise, you intuitively tear pieces of paper without scissors and place them in front of you.
You now have torn paper of neutral, colored, light and dark paper in front of you.
Now you take your first square and start gluing without thinking too much. Only the question: Which collage piece appeals to you the most. This one, so you glue it. Then you take a 2nd piece of paper and so on.
You always take the paper that speaks to you the most at this moment and lock your mind out. You don't want a second guess, just stick it on and enjoy the process.
Work quickly and don't think too long. The collage should be intuitive and playful. If you think too long, your mind will respond and prevent yourself from sticking. If you don't know what to do for too long, then take a new square and stick on there.
In total we glue on 4 squares. Then we dry these collages with the hairdryer and cut off the edges.
Now you take collage by collage and stick on until you are satisfied with the result. Try not to think too long in this step either. It should be glued really intuitively, quickly and with joy.
Leave the collages overnight and look at them again the next day. You will be amazed how better you like them after a day's gap.
I do this exercise several times a week and stick these little treasures in an art journal. Every now and then I really don't like one and then throw it away. But it rarely occurs.
I'll show you in the video how something like this can look. It's really fun to stick the collages in a book.
If you like, you can also choose a larger format. I also do this exercise with the 5 x 5 inch and 8 x 8 inch format. For me this kind of collage is pure meditation. It's quick, i'm creative, don't think too much about it and always enjoy seeing these little collages the next day.
