I am not a rocket scientist. Please explain to me why IM goes for a vertically designed lander as opposed to a more horizontal,lower COG to perhaps improve the odds of a successful landing? Thank you.

@@user-McGiver Apollo had a lower COG...no need of atmosphere ....just gravity...the problem is $$$s and the design of the fuel tanks...these are very low cost landers

why is there so much insistence on this landing system? on mars the airbag system works great. maybe a hybrid system between the two? the low gravity of the moon would help a lot.

Aeroshells don’t work on the moon. The moon is also rougher than Mars with steeper gradients.

Any time you add another system (airbags) you add multiple points of failure. Also the impact with airbags is not as smooth as a rocket landing. No atmosphere means you have to have engine braking anyway, so why not use it for the landing too.

@@allangibson8494 I noticed that most of the failures take place before landing. the probe reaches a stationary position and begins its vertical descent. and the most important is the landing area. with an airbag you shouldn't have to worry anymore. the gravity they put is much lower. you can use the classical solution up to a point, then you use the Martian solution. There it went successfully and no one complained about it.

Landing connection to laner should be from top of lander not the bottem. may be twicE as LONG AND MAY BE ANOTHER LEG but lander is to high above legs incase of slight surface and speed on aprouch touch down . +

I still haven't forgiven them for hiding the last landing, after they knew it had a slim chance of landing correctly after they found out they had left the lidar locked. They lost my trust that they will do the same again. The landing was the most disappointing thing I have seen, even compared to India's landing. No video and no telemetry.

Same problem? to tall? short stubby legs 5 legs twice out stretch area and long arms alway around extending to aid any off center landing . Moon surface can have many unexpected suprises very thin slim hair like shoot fexable rods may help make sure of a good landing
