Why are you able to do all of these variations so effortlessly and I'm working hard to get just one solid? :( Great content, thank you! :)

Using the lag has helped me a lot to improve my ball toss - however, at the end of a set my arm always got tired. Thanks for the fix! Will try it next time :)

Jon, I felt the same way. Then I did Nik's video analysis service, and brother, you ain't seen nothing yet. I still credit him with a major breakthrough on my forehand which was good but something was off... he nailed it. If you want that personal touch, do the vid analysis, it's awesome. No, I'm not a paid spokeperson :)

@@andrewhwang8951 I'm positive he is the real deal. For the past 9 years I've been watching various tennis channels on YT and very few channels have the quality content we see here. If I could I'd pay for In-person lessons with him. I'm in Brazil right now but will see what happens in the future. Cheers

Thanks Nick, Interesting to see the divergence of the coaches on at least 1 or 2 of these issues. The main issue of divergence being the toss. High toss more time and room for loading, but ball coming down faster. A lower toss yes with enough time to load, but easier to time. The pinpoint stance higher skill level....

Great insights! Did never notice that lag would help the serve. Interesting that all players improve their serve dramatically during their 20s. so this only shows how difficult the shot is. You can always improve your serve!

Great analysis and technical advice as we have come to expect. I would only add that some players are very tense when they start their service motion. They squeeze the racquet handle with a death grip. This tension tightens the muscles in the arm which doesn’t allow a smooth fluid motion. Try relaxing the grip when in the ready position. As you allow the racquet to lag you will increase the grip gradually as you swing up. I like to start with my thumb and forefinger gripping the handle and other fingers very relaxed. I wiggle them before I start my motion to place the ball up and increase hand tension as racquet moves from lag up,to strike the ball.

In the important serve stretch phase. The momentum developed with the legs has already been transferred to the body (no ground contact).

Switched to platform serve at age 57 and increased my consistency has improved because the upward thrust is more balanced . Not convinced about the benifits of pinpoint serve . I feel that Venus inconsistency on pressure points hurt her, otherwise she is the greatest server

In the WTA, in the majority of cases, do they use the continental grip for both first and second serves? (assuming flat/kick/slice for 1st and slice/kick for 2nd) Or do they switch to an eastern backhand grip or something between continental and eastern backhand? Or is it a mix?

Interesting video! What is your take on why ATP players like Ivanisevic and Krajicek, both monstrous servers, utilized the lag along with a low toss, if indeed a lower toss results in a loss of power? Was this not even known back in the 90s?
@IntuitiveTennis
@IntuitiveTennis 4 жыл бұрын
A loss of power from a low toss for most players. Tanner, Ivanisevic, Kyrgios have incredible power with a low toss because they possess the right genetic predispositions to be able to execute it.

Nikola, I’m a senior with a quick service motion, low toss and platform stance. Are there some pros who serve like this? And can I still produce an effective serve? I believe I have a lag even with this quick service motion.

You got my mind scrambling with this one. Usually quick rhythm servers use pin point. Dolgopolov is the only one I can think of with platform and quick rhythm, but I’m sure there are more

doesn’t ivanisevic have low toss and no lag. In fact I think ivanisevic tanner and curren similar. All with very low ball toss and the toss arm actually lags behind the serve arm. They are almost bring both arms up at same time and the toss barely goes out a few seconds prior to the swing. I find this helps better for first serves. My second serve I still toss low but maybe an inch or so higher as I swing slightly slower and work more on brushing with a slice or kick

Vandeweghe has one of the best first and second serve. Also Madison Keys. Shame they can't capitalize on it. We can mention Stosur who has the best second serve ever on wta.

If the "vast majority of ATP serves have these elements in common" with WTA serves, why single out the women? Why not just concentrate on the fact that these are "natural ways to create power?" If, indeed, they are natural ways to create power (not disputing that), why not just consider the techniques and forget about the modest (minor? insignificant?) gender difference in their use? As for that difference, it is not likely attributable to a differential in strength. If these are "natural ways to create power," then they benefit anyone, no matter what their strength or gender, and both men and women, in equal degree, would use them. After all, in every aspect of the game both men and women look for ways to generate pace naturally, with less effort, regardless of strength. If strength were the determining factor in the techniques' differential use, then the less powerful men would make more use of them, while the more powerful women would make less use of them. Have you noticed that this is the case? I haven't. If there is a meaningful gender distinction in the use of these techniques, attributing it to a difference in strength is, at best, speculative. While the techniques are well worth demonstrating, you have inserted an unnecessary gender distinction. Why?
@IntuitiveTennis
@IntuitiveTennis 4 жыл бұрын
Because 100% of the best WTA serves have these technical elements in common while there are some different characteristics among the top ATP serves.
@robertorolfo

It makes sense because most regular players can relate more to the WTA players than the ATP players. The average height for a man is probably pretty close to, or just above, the average height on the WTA tour. And most men are probably just as strong physically as WTA players, whereas that likely not the case with ATP players. If Ash Barty can serve the way she does with her physical characteristics, we can learn a lot from her, while trying to serve like Isner or Kyrgios (or even Federer) is pointless for the vast majority of regular players. Think about it...
