Pathophysiology / epidemiology:
Telescoping of one bowel segment into adjacent segment (most often ileocecal)
Bowel edema → ischemia & necrosis
Age 6 months to 3 years most common
Risk factors:
Hypertrophy of intestinal Peyer patches (eg, recent viral illness)
Pathologic lead point (eg, Meckel diverticulum, HSP, intestinal tumor)
Signs / symptoms:
Sudden, intermittent abdominal pain & vomiting
Sausage-shaped mass in right abdomen
Currant jelly stools
Lethargy or altered mental status
Diagnosis / management:
Ultrasound: target sign
Air (pneumatic) or saline enema
Surgical intervention for failed enema reduction or signs of peritonitis
