Progress not perfection :) You can do it. Keep practising. Each bit that gets more comfortable is success I was doing hums to clear my sinuses (release nitrous oxide - real science) and was playing around and looked up hum singing. Came to this. The throat song that comes from deep in is really is difficult, but I hit it a bit while playing with humming

So fun fact Inuit throat singing used to be a form of entertainment for the women of the tribe while the men were way on hunting trips. Was literally a game to see who would laugh first and now it’s a big huge tradition

Félix Soop Inuits and First Nations are two different people and race, we First Nations and Inuits don’t see each other as same people or race. I am Dene Inuits and Dene use to be warring tribes because Inuits were seen as invaders from land bridge. Eventually peace came between the tribes. Nowadays Denesuline and Inuits share the hunting grounds the far north.

I never really understood the phrase "respect the culture" which people seem to use so much. Cultures exist and persist. They often contribute unique ideas and art forms to the world. It seems more important and relevant to be interested in and even enjoy those unique ideas and art forms. I don't see how "respect" has anything to do with that. I respect the people who can perform the skills involved in those arts, especially if they are highly skilled. But I'm just not sure what it actually means to respect a culture in general. Cultures are going to go on existing completely independently of where or not i display "respect" for it, as long as those who are part of that culture want it to. Right?

Its wonderful to see people continue their ancestral traditions. The native people in the state i grew up in did not mantain a written language prior to European colonization so the rituals and practices passed down through the generations were the only source of historical data available that was anthropological, rather than archeological.

I grew up hearing this, not only from my Eskimo (she insisted on being called a Eskimo) Grandmother, but she was Mongolian too. Both cultures have throat singing. I was floored to see Western Inuit singing in this way. I was taught it was a Eastern Artic tradition. Thank you for sharing.

I've never heard the term "circumpolar region" before; it makes perfect sense. the cultures indigenous to the artic circle had to deal with similar challenges; some solved the problem similarly, some differently. It makes sense that Inuits, Laplanders, and Yupiks would all see some elements of their own culture in the others.

It's a handy term ... But ... If you start looking into the details of those circumpolar cultures, you'll notice that the term is a bit too broad and generalized. There's way more diversity in that ring than it might seem if you are looking north from a North American perspective. The Sami are QUITE different from the Inuit in quite powerful ways, for example.

I'm in a group in my school by the Inuit one of my classmates is actually a couple of them are. The group is a new generation of drum dancing we use the inuit drums and it's so fun to do! I'm also not even from this kind of culture but I still love it! Btw I'm only 9, you dont need to have a lot of practice. I've only been doing for a month and our instructor says were doing great!

There is a great documentary about Tuvan throat singing called "Genghis Blues". Very different tradition and sound but perhaps similar technique.
