At 84 years of age, I saw this movie in the theater in the 50's. I absolutely loved it. Of course, not being in the gaming generation or used to computer-animated effects, I saw this movie with the innocent eyes of a 50's kid and, for the time, this was groundbreaking. As a 50's kid, the movie was compelling, scary, and intimidating. Seeing it in my later years, I found the movie well done, very involving, and strangely unforgettable. (That last scene where the saucer lands again gave a dreamlike quality to the movie and for me, my imagination took off. Yes, it could be considered a relic of the primitive "Destination Moon" period of sci fi, however, I found its complexities and surprising turns very up-to-date. Cameron Menzies did a magnificent job on this movie and, in my estimation, he made this movie memorable. The later version of this movie was good, but I liked the original better!!!

Glad you did this, its a childhood fave of mine. When I was a youngster in the 80's (England) BBC2 used to show old movies on Saturday in the daytime when the TV was not being hogged by anyone else in the house so I could watch them. I think Invisible Man (with Claude Rains), Invaders From Mars, Them & Creature From The Black Lagoon were my favourites. Great memories.

This seemed like a weird, hokey alien film at first, but I think you guys nailed what it's really about at the end: The Red Scare. This is what people were afraid of. The collective paranoia of the era was that communists would sneak in, they'd look and act like everyone else, but they'd attempt to supplant their communities and destroy their military and law enforcement operations to benefit Mother Russia (or something to that effect). I think the biggest hint towards that was the bright and vivid red light in the alien cave. It's a not very subtle way of telling the viewer "This is what you must fear!"

The interesting thing about that movie is that the aliens needed copper and their technology was like this weird bio-mechanical crap that needed copper to run. The kid gets a laser gun in the movie that requires him to jam pennies into it to get it to fire. Weird but interesting take on the concept.

The bubble room reminded me of another alien cavern which appears in the X-Files episode "Gender Bender." It had the same bubbly, glistening, kind of purple feel. This is unrelated to movies, but I wonder if Craig has read any manga? Two of my favorite series are time travel stories that he might find interesting. One is Jin, a story about a brain surgeon who is transported back to the end of the Edo period and the other is A Chef of Nobunaga, about a chef transported back to the Sengoku period. Both well written and they really scratch that time travel story itch for me.

But the whole thing with Mars Attacks is that it's supposed to be cathartic watching all the jerks and idiots and assholes get blasted by the Martians, and then watching the Martians (who are also jerks and idiots and assholes) get head-blooied in turn! Note that the very few folks who actually survived to the end also happened to be the very few actually decent characters in the film.

Also the main Talosians from Star Trek's 'The Cage' were ostensibly male but were played by women and dubbed by men. I'm surprised you don't think people say 'Gee'; I'm sure I've heard yous say it from time to time (although usually ironically). It's a kind of euphemism along with 'Geez' and 'Gee Whiz'; I'm surprised they let Marty exclaim "JESUS CHRIST!" so often in BTTF.
