There is small mistake in the video, Finlands bunkers weren't build during cold war, we continue to build them to this day... Every other country stopped building them after cold war, but in Finland you are required to have bomb shelter if your building houses x-amount of people. For example my apartment building has a bomb shelter down stairs, with machine ventalation and water supply for few days. And after the initial attack, i would head for the swimming hall in town, because it can take a hit from a nuke and shrug it off... What needs to be emphasized is that the Finnish Airforces don't require a fixed airbase to carry out operations. There are multiple road strips that they would come to rely on with mobile systems for fueling and rearming the fighters faster than the Russians can get a fix on those positions.

Finns would use bases in Sweden and Norway
@JPPVESA7 ай бұрын
@@eminence_obviously on some instances, but it takes a lot of operational time to fly that distance. Roadside maintenance is something they have been training for several pilot generations now, and it's the most safe and efficient method. There's nothing permanent infrastructure and it/they can shift locations between ongoing operations.
@jkausti67377 ай бұрын
To facilitate this the Finnish FA-18s acttually have a naval style langing gear. It's more rugged, and thus helps when you have to operate from ad hoc bases and road runways. Also the support for the planes is designed to be mobile to help with this. Pretty sure the new F-35s will too.

There are two ways to improve force survivability: dispersing or hardening. The Finnish Air Force practices both. The problem with dispersing is that it stretches the support logistics. You need to haul fuel, weapons and all the maintenance apparatus to all the austere locations. The other option is hardening. The FAF is currently building underground shelters for the entirety of the upcoming F-35 fleet.

Good video sir! I’d like to add the most important thing about invading Finland. The Nature. We have seen how Russia uses mechanized assaults to conquer Ukraine but when it comes to Finland, it’s totally different story. At our eastern boarder, there is nothing but thick forests, lakes, swamps, rivers, rocks and hills. It is impossible to roll with tanks from there or with anything that has wheels or tracks. Perfect for the defender and a nightmare for the attacker.
@MikkoMurmeli7 ай бұрын
Great point. We do have the kind of nature that is, well, hard to walk for those who haven't been to this kind of field, even though it's not Amazon. Soldiers can drown and die in the swamps just by making a small mistake there, and we can take the swamp tree-paths which allow a bit safer and easier access through swamps, away when war starts. We are quite prepared, for a reason it seems.
@unknownentity82567 ай бұрын
Yes even todays most modern tanks from our eastern neighbour would have to resort to approaching from very narrow (mined) roads, while under artillery fire, ATGM squad ambushes, SAMS bombings from aviation, and at the same time attempt to rebuild broken bridges to move forward, not to mention getting rid of the destroyed vehicles blocking the road. It would be literally impossible.
@TrentSteel.7 ай бұрын
@@unknownentity8256 Exactly. Nature is one of the biggest reasons why it is estimated that Russia would need a force, that is 4 times larger than the defending army. So in this case, Russia would need 1,120 000 million men to get through the first wave of 280,000 Finnish soldiers. After that, there is still 620 000 Finnish soldiers left so you do the math. If you really think about it, that is not far off, if you know what kind of nature Russia would have to get through. Winter war for example. Finland lost 25,000-30,000 soldiers and Russia lost around 140,000-170,000 soldiers so the ratio is there.

Interesting little fact about airfields. I live in a certain bordertown very close to Russia, we have a historical airfield very near my house. That place was extensively used during WWII and albeit quiet these days, its still maintained and ready. FAF has used it many times when doing joint exercises with our local army base which is housing a fast response and spec ops troops, the ones who will be the first in fire if something happens. I'm quite sure that airfield would get tons of traffic within just hours if a conflict started, Its likely one of the easternmost airfields we have ready, so that would mean furthest reach. Right around the time when the war in Ukraine started, a lot of heavy airtraffic became norm here, border guards but also big ass helis I hadn't seen before. Same with the shooting range, since we got in NATO, there has been tons more shooting over there, not only rifles but MG's and what sounds like 30mm cannons. I hear it all day and it sounds nice, that's the sound of safety, our forest rambos sure got bigger ammunition budget these days and I want them to keep it up. A friend of mine is one of those fast response guys, he's a runner, MMA fighter and all around cool dude. Therefore I can only count that me myself will do everything in my power to help my fellow soldiers and my country and I know as a nation we can do a fucking lot when we gather our strength and hearts together. But as a number of countries have been already execrising on our soil for a single mutual purpose and perhaps for a single outcome, I have to say that perhaps it is my duty to help these nations as well. In example the Yellow state attacks Britain, perhaps it's my duty to be there for them. But the question yet exists: Will there be help for us? Have we fought with Ukraine? Should we fight alongside with them? One thing I'm for sure, deep in my heart, If that stupid asshole from east decides to cross that border, there will be at least one good outcome that'll happen; This stupid fanatic psychosis of Putin and the game called Russia versus the rest of the world will come to a complete halt. I think we should have donated some of that artillery and our F-16 to Finland instead, we need to put a line in the sand in relation to where the borders with the EU are, and so far only Poland is at the forefront of that point!

Thank you for this video! Preparation in advance is second nature to us Finns. Already in the first winter in ancient Finland, those who were not prepared died. Finland's defense forces are designed to repel a potential enemy attack to the point where an attack is not worthwhile. And it has no known weak points. For example, airports can be replaced by numerous emergency landing spots on the road.
@iPelaaja17 ай бұрын
Air Force also operates from dispersed bases and road bases. It is impractical for Russia to destroy all runways in every airfield, the roads specifically to operate as back-up runways next to them and all the other road bases. They would need hundreds of missiles each costing millions. And even then due to the flexibility of the Air Force, it would probably be operated from Swedish or Norwegian terrain.

We're probably weaker than in WW2. Equipment is good, men are decent, but our service folks in the military now aren't as fit and life-seen and hardy as they were back then, I bet. Too much McDonalds. But yes... we do have Sisu. Guts. Many of us, me at least, can face death better than most russians I'd say. I've confronted mine already a bit, didn't have an NDE yet I think, but it was kinda close I guess. Doc said "why aren't you dead? It's a miracle, most people would be" when I came back from 10-day coma. I'm pretty fine now, can't probably run much, but that doesn't mean I can't make myself a living target for the enemy to reveal themselves by letting them know I'm there, and then fire me all they can while rest of the squad picks them all up. If that rids me full of bullets and leaves me dying there, beyond any salvation except a nice afterlife, that's totally good. I can live with that, and die with that. That's how prepared we can be.

In wartime the finnish air force would be operated guerilla-style from stretches of highways and caves that are purpose build with defence in mind, like the rest of the infrastructure. The airports would be first russian targets anyway. The F-35 was studied and tested long and hard could it be operated in this way, and in wintertime too. The Gripen is purpose build for this style but I guess the F-35 manages too as it is what we ended up ordering.

@@Leopardipzg The F-35 is such a high maintenance and delicate jet that we don't have many airfields suitable for it. How does steath help when Russia knows exactly where they are and when they take off? A Gripen can hide in a shed, be maintained between flights in a couple hours by two trucks and a crew of 8, and take off from any stretch of asphalt on a backroad. Having that steath capability is good for one thing; a single surprise frontal attack that it most likely will not return from.

Look at satellite images from Finnish and Russian border. Look at the roads. Our side looks like a maze of roads with multiple dead ends, while Russian side has few roads just coming in straight.
@timomiettinen187 ай бұрын
Excellent! Worth adding to this: 1) the ruskies have long supply lines in the northern part of the border from their bases. E.g. 250 km from Murmansk just to the border through Arctic wilderness. They would have serious trouble to haul fuel to their tanks and other vehicles, and 2) pls take a closer look at the map and the terrain. In addition to bogs and marshes , we have a lot of lakes and water. A lot. The lakes create natural choke points all the way due to the fact that we have those bogs and dense forests on either side of the narrow roads in the east. You cannot drive a tank to a forest and operate it there. So the terrain creates in fact narrow corridors for a mechanised army and the forests uncountable places to hide and ambush. A turkey shoot for us defenders. Hakkaa päälle!

In Finland you go to jail if you refuse to serve our country. Almost everyone here deems that as well warranted punishment for malingering. There is easy option to serve in non-armed role (aiding elderly, etc). If you decline that, you are thrown to brig. We take national security seriously.
@kimj25707 ай бұрын
@kimmoj2570 Only 20 year old men are subject to conscription. Women are not, and many question why. Almost 2/3s of young men go through military service here. Only Israel can beat those numbers (just because there both sexes serve). Compare that to Norway and Sweden, where at most couple tens percentage of young men are called up (now that they finally reintroduced conscription after years of trying without). In Sweden or Norway national service aint mandatory like in Finland. There you can decline. In Finland you serve hard time in proper jail being malinger. Police will fetch you from your home, and deliver you to brig, if you do not show up. Vast majority of youth come with eagerness. In here being served brings you magnitutes above those who havent in job markets. Country has invested to you hundreds of thousands Euros in education and healthcare, and will invest even more in later years. It aint free lunch.

@@MilitaryRated I think there is a better video of how Sweden does it with their planes... You can assume Finland has a similar system in use because they have been working together for a long time. Only found a "hot-refuel" of a Norwegian F35 from Finland, they kinda like to keep things secret/quiet. I know the criteria for the planes for Finland taking F18's was because they can be used in a similar way as the Swedish planes. My point is that the planes would be safe except if its an surprise attack, like no one saw the troops at Ukraine's border... I know that Finland stored planes in Sweden at one point in history.

@@MilitaryRated Between us, we never spoke about this, but whole country is filled with secret infrastructure from thousands of underground border bases to masked storages in places where you think no plane would ever land. Some are carver into granite and would look like an ordinary hill. We also do speed-camo. For example unlike russian artillery battery, our cannons are spread miles away and masked as common forest floor with "a treetrunk" sticking out. Record from no cannon to full position under camo is under 23 minutes. This camo is also infrared proof so they just have to be lucky finding us from endless woods. Three bonus points worth considering: 1) SISU which means the Finnish people have insane courage and "guts" especially against seemingly impossible odds. 2) Practically every male (and thousands of women) is military trained and there are a LOT of guns in the country so while it is entirely possible to _invade_ Finland or at least parts of it, _keeping_ it is impossible due to majority of citizens providing heavy guerrilla resistance. 3) As it turns out the Russian army was not much of a foe to begin with and our Ukrainian friends have been slaughtering them for over two years now; there simply are no well trained motivated effective armed forces nor modern equipment to invade anything any more with over half a million soldiers down either dead or wounded.

As for fighter jets, we dont rely on airports due that is where the enemy strikes first if they have any brains. Instead, all major highways in Finland can be transferred as runaways in a heartbeat. All pilots are trained to land on highway and even Nato allies comes here to learn the same. A small unit, few cars and maybe dozen trained persons can drive anywhere in our highway system, wait till fighter lands, refuels plane, places new missiles etc and fighter can get back up. If i remember right, this whole thing when aircraft is on ground takes like 15 minutes. Then the ground crew can change location for next plane. So yeah, let enemy bomb our highways if they like. Mostlikely our airports are empty at that point and enemy just spends their material for nothing.
