Well done! I was not aware of the cogongrass problem in the south at all. Appreciate mentioning how cogongrass raises fire temperatures to a point that damages longleaf pine ecosystems which absolutely should not be messed with. Y'all are badasses for working with the Alabama Department of Agriculture & Industries to express this cogent point for conservation. Up in the pacific northwest where I'm at the battle is being waged with Cheatgrass in Washington/Oregon. Invasive grasses are indeed a big deal that are damaging ecosystems that everyone should pay attention to. Y'all deserve a lot more views. I think you are rock stars. Absolutely crushing it, really appreciate the video production involved to craft this! Thorough cover of the problem, on the ground, with some of the people involved in solving the problem. Fantastic. 👍

Wow! These are such kind words! Thank you for the comment. We have a small, but mighty, team that are sincerely motivated by being able to get these conservation stories out there. Thanks for your work as well! I used to live in Oregon and can definitely appreciate how much of a challenge that is to deal with. Keep fighting the good fight!

Thanks Adrian! And thanks for the work you do. The pine rockland is one of the coolest habitats in Florida, in my opinion, and it's great to know that there's good people working on understanding it better!

I live in Port Charlotte, FL. I had no idea until recently that I have cogon grass. Alabama is doing a great job. Florida needs to get with the program. Have you looked into using hogs? I read that they can and will eat it readily including the roots. Thanks, this video was very informative.

Back in 2013, I saw cogon grass seed bags for sale at an Ace Hardware in Chunchula, AL. Welcome to Alabama.

Isn't that nuts?! Legislation has got to get passed to ban the sale of cogongrass in nurseries. It still happens! Japanese bloodgrass can revert to cogongrass and I think that many people don't realize that.

Stimupro's Cogon-X mixed with Glyphosate has eradicated every known spot on my farm in West Alabama. It tricks the Cogongrass into uptaking more of the Glyphosate. It works better on young tender grass, so (against the recommendations) I burned the dormant grass and sprayed one time after spring emergence. It's still gone.

Cogongrass coordinator! Ed O'danials! Was I ever surprised to see you. I searched for some general direction for spraying this grass, because more and more people are asking me if I can spray. I was glad to get some trustworthy information. I'm up for the challenge. We really need to get a handle on this mess. I see so much while conducting prescribed burns. And it burns so hot. Thanks great video!

I really appreciate the work you guys do with these videos. They are extremely informative, and it makes me glad to know that there are organizations out there looking to help Longleaf Pine ecosystems recover. I’m not sure if you guys do requests or if you have a set timeline, but is there any chance you could do an episode (or a few) on the ants of these ecosystems? More ants live in these habitats than anywhere else in the country, and some only live in these and similar ecosystems, such as the Florida harvester ant (Pogonomyrmex badius). In any case, thanks for making this amazing channel! :)

Thank you for the comment and for checking out our videos! We would LOVE to feature ants. I personally have a pretty deep fascination with them and can absolutely appreciate their role in the ecosystem. The key with us is finding sponsors that believe in what we're trying to do. However, within a given season, we often have some latitude about what we can feature. I will keep this request in mind, because I would absolutely love to do it. There's a lot of really cool things you could do to feature ants in these ecosystems!

Thank you. I recently saw a stand of cogongrass along 75 north near Ocala and was blown away by how much it had taken over. And now it is in the Francis Marion NF in SC. After learning from a recent FNPS lecture that fill dirt is often a culprit or mowing, it was obvious why I have seen this near forestry roads that look filled in around wet spots and the spread radiates from the roadside. And yes cogongrass has some DEEP rhizomes...Bermuda grass has deep rhizomes but holy cow. And it will take years upon years to combat this imo. Heck just dealing with other nonnative invasives takes years of constant fighting.

In my opinion, legislation should be passed that requires better screening of equipment and materials to prevent introductions. Yes, it would cause slow-downs and cost money, but it would save hundred of thousands in the long run.

This kind of grass is out of control in many provinces in China. The whole mountain is cover by this grass, which causes fires and prevents other plants growing and animals breeding .

I have a question for the government acronyms. Why do they not take care of all the cogangrass in the highway medians? There is tons of it on I-10 in Baldwin county and highway 59 North of Stapleton. It does also spread by seed if I'm not mistaken. So if left unmanaged in the highways and will continue to spread into our forestry lands.
@peterkleinhenz
@peterkleinhenz 2 жыл бұрын
That's an excellent question. The programs mentioned in the video take care of infestations mostly on private lands. The managing agencies of public lands, including right-of-ways, are the ones responsible for the of the management of cogongrass on their lands, for the most part. So, for the right-of-ways, that would likely be the Alabama Department of Transportation. The more people that speak out and request treatment, the more likely it will be to happen.

Very informative and entertaining to boot, mostly due to the host. Nice job! Cogon grass is THE major problem in the southeast, just as the winter annual grasses like Bromus tectorum (cheatgrass), Taenitherium caput-medusae (medusahead grass) and Ventenata dubia are literally destroying an entire sagebrush ecosystem in the Western states (Great Basin). Saying that, there is at this point no way to eradicate it in certain states. States have been trying for decades now.

Totally. And invasive grasses are decimating the Lower Rio Grande Valley in Texas as well. It's a massive problem, that seems to get far less attention than invasive animals or other environmental concerns. I hope that researchers can work on ways to creatively manage these species. Spraying and control certainly helps, but we have to come up with some innovative methods to tackle these grasses. I have no idea what that would entail, but it's definitely a serious need. Thanks for the kind words and for checking out this episode!

@@peterkleinhenz "It's a massive problem, that seems to get far less attention than invasive animals or other environmental concerns." Well, I do know that people start caring when their property or something that they care about is threatened. For example, Cenchrus ciliaris (buffel grass) is well known to be a fire hazard in Arizona. PLUS, it is threatening the beloved Saguaro cactus ecosystem, so people do pay attention at those times.

Rhizomes aren’t roots but are stem shoot offs. I think they create adventitious roots and allow the plant to quickly spread
@peterkleinhenz

That's correct! And they are one of the reasons behind why cogongrass is so challenging to eradicate.

Yeah it is true that cogon grass can easily catch fire but it helps and protects my young mangoes f4om drought maybe because it serves as shade from the extreme heat of the sun or its roots gives water to them. Now i enjoyed the mango fruits.
